feb clean your house challenge!

I read a post on here recently about logging house cleaning as daily exercise. Just like every forum, many different opinions on the subject. This subject has been on the back of my mind and some of the posts did bother me a bit. When i started on here, i had a goal in mind to lose weight. And like many others, were never really sure where to start. I am not working. So i had to start with what i had at home. I am lucky to have a supportive fiance. I have an elliptical here. So, i started to use my elliptical. I would do 15-20 minutes in my bra and a pair of shorts and the fan on full blast. Believe me, not a pretty site lol! Anyways, when i did all i could feel i could do, i would stop and start cleaning. i would go do dishes, throw in laundry, pick up the house. Then i would get back on the machine and do another 15-20 minutes. And so on..
Point of this story is. House cleaning is exercise! Not everyone is a house wife. Some people work 10-12 hour shifts. On there feet all day. Lifting, walking, etc. Over the summer, before my fiance had cancer, i worked in a very very hot machine shop. 2nd shift, 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. The temps got over 100 degrees easy! So, your going to tell me that house cleaning is not exercise to a person who just worked all day in those conditions? The last thing you want to do when you get home is move! Maybe in front of an air conditioner!
I also clean houses on the side for extra money. I have done this for years. I see many women, like the women i work for, who just have the extra money and would rather pay someone. One lady in particular is very over weight. She does not work and has a husband that is a truck driver that makes a decent wage. She could easily do the work herself. Save the money. But, she will pay me to do the work. I like the extra money. But she needs people like us to motivate her. She could probably lose some weight if she would just simply clean her own house!
I also have friends on here that are older, disabled, etc. Many of them are not going to want to rock out to insanity or Jillian im afraid lol. If people like us would motivate them to just run a vacuum a few times a week, that is more physical activity then they usually do. Even if its not a huge calorie burn, its STILL activity. And the more activity you do, it motivates you to do more.
I want to start a challenge! I see many monthly challenges and thought this was a good idea! I want you to set a goal of how many hours a week you will devote to just cleaning your house! Set a weekly goal and report back your progress! You can choose whether or not to log it. Up to you. Include shoveling, lawn mowing, anything! Do some projects around your house that you would not normally do. Such as cleaning cobwebs, organizing closets, clean and sweep out your garage? Heck, even bring out a paint brush and paint a room. Feel free to post your projects and brag about them! I just want to see you get off your butt and just move. That is a great start to any weight loss goal. Im not at all saying that healthy eating is not important. But changes will only come a little at a time. It took time to learn bad habits. It will take time to change them as well!
*My personal goal is to log 20 minutes per day of housework! i have one house to clean this week, for another 4 hours. I also will log snow shoveling as we get snow.
Lets move it people! Feel free to add me too for motivation!

I couldn't agree more!
How do you think ladies from the 1920's and 30's stayed in shape...good ole fashioned cleaning.
I can work up a sweat more moving from room to room scrubbing hard at things than I would doing 30mins of aerobics.
I've recently ordered a calorie counter watch so that I can see how much I do burn off when I do things such as this.
Keep up the hard scrubbage!0 -
I am so in, you have no idea! :drinker:
My goal is, by the end of the week, to have swept and washed my floors, fold and put away all my laundry, and clean off my desk.
After that, my goal will be sweeping and washing floors once a week (this is a two-hour activity).0 -
sometimes you have to build yourself up at home to want to go out and do more. nothing is worse then being the fat chick out sweating like a pig and being pointed at and made fun of. it took me a few weeks of just cleaning and working out on my elliptical to get the courage to join a gym. and you can get a great workout gardening, raking leaves, etc. so many things you can do just at home. and who is going to see the sweat pooling down your face when your kicking butt and getting your yard all pretty?
its funny cause last summer, me and my sister were driving and saw a girl walking on the side of the road. big girl and covered with sweat. we started to laugh and had to stop. at least she is out walking! were the ones in the air conditioned car and over weight. it takes moments like that to really think.0 -
I'm with you on including house cleaning on your exercise log. I am terribad about cleaning house; I work FT and work the occassional weekend, so all I REALLY want to do when I get home is fix dinner, get the dishes done and veg out the rest of the night! This past week/weekend, I logged probably between 3-4 hours of cleaning.
The way I see it, movement is movement. And with it being a fairly nasty winter in the Midwest, this is a main source of activity until I can get out and walk my neighborhood.
Keep up the good housework, ladies and gents!0 -
I clean daily, but do a big clean on the weekend which I definitely log!!0

I want to give my floors a really good clean this week, including pulling out both 3 seater sofa's to get under them.
Hoover and mop the floors, I think I will even wipe the sofa's themselves over, down the sides of the cushion covers etc.
I swear my cat puts his fur into little piles and hides it in the little places lol
Think I will wear my heart rate monitor and see what it says at the end0 -
Hey, i am a house wife and my house is never perfect. I don't spend hours cleaning! I'm in, my husband would probably like these end results.0

I'm in and will add you too x0

I count housework as exercise. After I clean hard for several hours, I feel like I've worked out harder than 2 water aerobic classes. I also count the walking hours from shopping as a slow paced walk. Meal prep gets a bit of credit too!
Now I'm a big girl so this activity for me is significant. If I were at my goal, or close to it, it might be harder to lose and therefore these activities might not be so important. I have a long way to go! Best wishes!0 -
Oh im in. I could use the challenge not only to keep me moving but to get some things done around the house. Have you thought about actually putting this under groups. Then there is a room just for this topic?
Ok, lets see what we can accomplish0 -
Cleaned out my closets and took a bunch of clothes to Clothes Mentor - look on-line for stores in your area. They pay you on the spot for clothes they want and give you what they don't want back. Better than consignment shop. It is amazing to get money for closet cleaning. They only do ladies clothes, shoes, jewelry and purses.
Money for Cleaning!!!0 -
I knew a lot of people would agree! I am going to invest in a heart monitor eventually too just to see. But with this journey comes investments. Little at a time! People try to make it sounds so easy. But I have added a gym membership and higher groceries from healthier food selections. Protein bars for workouts. I still need shoes and other items. Even better bras lol. Its a gradual process. And i think that does discourage people.
Im new on here and learning how to post stuff. I should make it a group.
And for those who have spouses, what man would not be happy with a more productive wife lol!0 -
I'm in. I'd like to try for 30 minutes/day. My house could sure use it. I have four kids hard at work messing it up!!0

Late to the take-up, but I'll try as well. This will mean having to do more than the bare minimum of keeping a path cleared between rooms to get past my BMR. :laugh:0

Okay, so I cleaned both my bathrooms today and scrubbed one of the tubs down with oxyclean. My hands look like they are jerky now but my bathrooms are soooo clean! Oh and my laundry is done.0
