I'm an avid runner and I do strength training six days a week. I've been running 5-6 miles a day since May. Twice this week I've gotten a metallic smell in my nose about ten minutes after my run and then I faint. I'm wondering if you guys have ever dealt with this and know what might be causing it. I have a very healthy diet and am in good shape so I don't feel it could be the result of what I'm eating.

I've only had one nose bleed in my life and I think I was in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade. You need to make a doctor's appt. asap. I would also not do anymore running until you go to the doctor. Actually, I don't think you should do anymore working out until you see your doctor.

any history of bleeding disorders in your family?

doesn't sound like a diet issue to me - unless you are getting like no vitamin K or something weird.

hard to really answer on a message board, I will guarantee you wont get an appropriate answer on here, gotta go see your doctor

Unfortunately I walk amongst the terminally uninsured, I wouldn't make it past the front door of a doctors office. I did have a blood test done recently and there seem to be no vitamin deficiencies. I'm thinking it could be an inner ear infection. Anyway, thanks for your comments guys.

No history of bleeding disorders. I've never even dealt with nose bleeds. The thing is my nose doesn't actually bleed. I just get the metallic smell of blood but there's no blood in my nose. I've fainted twice this week and I've been getting pretty bad headaches. I've thought about going to the emergency room but I know they won't do anything outside of put a bandaid on it and tell me to go to a doctor.

inner ear problem will not cause nose bleed. Their are clinics that see people on a fee per income basis, so make some calls and get checked

The metallic smell and or taste can be from a sinus infection and usually blood will give off a metallic taste/smell. I know you say you're in shape and all but how 'bout have your blood pressure checked regularly? High blood pressure can cause a nose bleed as well as causing you to pass out. Please keep a phone handy or have someone either with you or checking on you a LOT til you figure out what's happening.

Find a walk-in clinic, uninsured is no reason to not take care of yourself. You may rack up some bills but most medical clinics especially if part of a hospital will work out payment plans if you do not have insurance. If you are in the US, they are legally not allowed to refuse medical care to anyone. Going to a clinic and paying $50 to maybe up to a couple hundred dollars is much better then having someone call an ambulance when you pass out somewhere and winding up with ER fees.

If you live near a Walmart you can get your blood pressure taken with a blood pressure machine at the pharmacy for free. Also, maybe you can post your info to http://www.webmd.com/. Good luck and I hope you find out what your issue is soon.

Go.to.the.doctor. or talk to one of the trainers at the gym. They will probably tell you the same thing. But fainting is no joke. Maybe a trainer can be a witness and give a suggestion.?

I get migraines, dizziness and major nosebleeds when the seasons change or the weather is really kooky, but not from exercise. But if this has only been a recent thing, I would make an appointment with your doctor.

    This.

It could be high blood pressure. Get your blood pressure taken asap to rule that out. Obviously as everyone else has said you need to go to the doctor before something potentially more serious happens, thats if it is something serious in the first place which chances are it is not, but it is not worth the risk is it?

I just wanted to let you guys know I went to the doctor and they ran all of the blood tests and did a CT and couldn't find anything wrong. I think that's good news, but I'm still having the problem.

Interesting. I have this very same thing (the metallic smell, no fainting as of yet), but only after pushing/pulling at my max on squats or deadlifts.

Kinda makes me look forward to the day when I pull a max effort dead and shoot blood out of my nose onto the mirror on the gym wall.

you look very thin, are you sure youre getting adequate calories? i cant see a diary. that could explain fainting but i have no idea about the nose bleeds and metallic smell.

I'm very healthy and definitely getting enough calories. It doesn't happen after strength training or other workouts. Only after running. They recommended I see a cardiologist but I definitely can't afford that, so I won't be doing that. I might get a heart rate monitor though.

It doesn't happen to me after strength training. It's such a strange thing. The doctor said that because it's happening after my work outs and not during it's not as concerning. I've started just coming home from my runs throwing myself onto my bed and putting my feet on the wall. It's preventing the fainting but not the metallic smell. The headaches are pretty bad too.

In some of your recent posts you said you eat 1200 calories a day, run 5-6 miles a day and don't eat back your exercise calories. I think maybe the nose bleeds/fainting could be from high blood pressure from overworking your body and not eating enough? A few years ago I was running daily and not eating enough and had similar fainting spells. good luck and take care of yourself!

Not true. While I have insurance I also have a $10,000 deductible. When I have to go to see a doctor I tell them I have no insurance and (SURPRISE!) they have a cash price. I've never had an issue with a doctors office that won't work with you if you don't have insurance.

Seriously. Instead of posting on a message board to people who are not medically qualified suck it up and go see a professional.

Agree. I think it's very likely you aren't eating enough/are running too much. The only time I've come close to fainting is when I went and exercised after work after not eating lunch that day. Got very lightheaded while doing some cable pulls and had to lay down to recover.

Your description says you want to focus on living healthy. Putting yourself into that kind of calories defecit on a daily basis is NOT healthy, especially for someone as thing as your picture shows you to be.

If you live in the north, where it's REALLY cold, you're likely living in a very dry atmosphere from heat, which will cause nosebleeds sometimes. When you run (well, when I run), you tend to really breathe deeply, I'm wondering if your sinus and those tiny capillaries in your nose are dried-out from the heat, then when you stress it by running, it ruptures?

The metalic smell may be your nosebleed blood (which is full of iron) going down the back of your throat (sorry - I know, gross!).

Fainting... Hmmm, are you eating properly, a calorie deficit is OK, but you don't want to over-do it. You really should eat-back your exercise calories!

Have you considered a purchasing humidifier (if you are in a colder area & use heat)?

That said - I agree with pretty-much everyone else, it's worth talking to some medical professional about it.

Sorry to be so skeptical, but then maybe Im just confused.... but I dont understand how you could, in a span of approximately 11 business hours:

    1. Scheduled a doctors appt.
    2. Visit the doctor.
    3. Make it to the lab. (obviously no 24 hr fast?)
    3. Have the lab results back.
    4. Have a CT scan scheduled
    5. Have the CT pics delivered to a doc.
5 Have the CT scan reviewed
    6. Have all the results back for the doctor to conclude there is no problem and no need to continue testing?

.....And all this done over the weekend? My spidey sense says to me....Hmmmmm?

Do you live in a cold dry climate? When I lived in Wisconsin I would get nosebleeds whenever I exerted myself on cold dry winter days from the lack of humidity in the air

All done with no insurance, which is why she said she couldn't go to the doctor in the first place.

So what is "enough calories"? The fact that you avoided the question raises some red flags. If you truly are eating only 1200 while strength training and running 5-6 miles a day you're definitely not eating enough. I'll randomly theorize that you'd need a minimum of double what you're currently eating (assuming it's true).

This is probably the answer. Bet she wasn't expecting this thread to turn out like it did...
