How do I find a personal trainer? My 30 something boyfriend had a hip replacement a few months ago, has been released from PT and we’re looking at starting at the gym. I would like to find a personal trainer with experience working with people with injuries and medical needs. The bios of trainers at the gym I thought we would join, I find that all of them have had the minimum amount of training and certification. I’m overwhelmed trying to figure out how to find the right gym and the write trainer.

Can anyone provide any advice or suggestions?

I'd ask his Dr. or Physical Therapist for a recommendation or at least what qualifications you should look for.

Some physical therapy locations also double as a gym. My gym is like that and you have the option of having the physical therapist setting up your workout routine with your personal trainer... Maybe that is an option?

You are absolutely right about trainers at gyms. Most have minimal 2 week certification with no anatomy background
First question,Is he ready to start exercising? If so let him do the research as he can discuss procedure and any limitations
Suggest he ask PT perhaps he/she could help either by referral or with a criteria list
If there is a rehabilitation center close ask them
If there is an aquatic rehab close they would be a great resource
    Finally he should consult orthopedist
    Good luck

Thank you for the replies. He seemed to get on well with the people at the physical therapy location, I’ll have him give them a call and ask if they have suggestions.
