Vitamins??

Options
I've heard diet specialists talk about the importance of taking OTC vitamins while dieting. I'm an RN of 12 years and know that some "cheap" vitamins consist of more filling than vitamins and are useless to take. I realize we get vitamins from the foods we eat as well, but like many women my age, I simply don't have time during the day to eat well-balanced meals all day long. I know it's important to eat right, and I'm not trying to substitute vitamins for actual meals. But I am already anemic at my healthiest, and I already feel tired, cold, and sluggish through the day. Anyone out there who knows of a really good multivitamin that is quality?

I have found that I feel the best when I take vitamins from GNC... have tried different ones over the years and always go back to them...

Go to your local health food store and talk to someone there and read the labels. They typically have vitamins that are not packed with fillers.

As for getting all of your nutrients from whole foods (which people here will argue that you can get every single vital nutrient from whole foods) it's nearly impossible no matter how well you eat.

ETA: That argument would make sense if someone wasn't eating anything and just taking vitamins for their nutrients.

My wife and I both take this multivitamin that is available at COSTCO and Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TULJAQ/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00 .

It contains much of what you would find in more expensive multivitamins for nearly half the price. I also supplement it with fish oil and flax seed (either milled or oil) to get some extra Omega-3s. I have begun to see a noticible difference in my energy levels throughout the day as well as my skin health.

My thoughts on vitamins are much like yours. I feel that no matter what i can do to eat healthy there is still something I'm lacking. So even if I don't need the extra vitamins it serves to "top off the tank" where my diet fails.

I just take the women's ultra mega from GNC. Sometimes I take a couple of my daughter's chewables. I'm also generally anemic, depending on where I am in my cycle, so the added iron definitely makes a difference and I feel better, have more energy, etc. The cheap ones can sometimes pass through your system without ever being digested.

For the ones I take, the "serving" size is 2 caplets, so I take one in the morning (with my breakfast protein shake) and another in the evening with supper cos I think they're better absorbed that way. I eat clean for the most part, but I just don't think it's possible to get everything we need in a day. Especially with weight training and cutting fat, vitamin and mineral stores get depleted. I take fish oil, too.

I used to take a supplement in little packets. It was an effervescent powder, which is supposed to be the most readily absorbed. I can't recall the name, though, but it was pretty pricey.

I like Optimum Nutrition Opti-Women. I only buy from Swanson's. Swanson's is family owned, their customer service is second to none! When you call them a person answers the phone, no need to press 1 for English, and they aren't in India :)

I only use Shaklee vitamins. They are wonderful! And I always notice a difference in my energy if I am not taking them. Oh and you can't get them in any store but if you look on their website you can enter your zip code and find them local.

Anything really that is in a liquid or powdered vitamin form! I have this stuff called Alkilinity Fuel... it's a full multi-vitamin in powder form which you just mix into water and tastes awesome. It's all from spirulina, wheat grass, alfalfa, kelp, ginger, and a bunch of other superfoods. All the vitamins and minerals you need at a 90-100% absorption rate.

Tablets, chewies, gummies, and the like are all garbage and you end up peeing ~90% of them out. Effectively only giving you about 10% of the vitamins that are listed on the bottle.
