In the process of Atkins - Induction

Hey! I'm Gwenna. I'm 20 years old, 5'2'' and about 180 lbs.
Please don't tell me how you don't think the Atkins diet is healthy, or that it's unsafe, I have seen it work, and I have the go ahead from my doctor to do this diet.
I am on day three of Induction and oddly enough, the carb craving hasn't kicked in yet. My sister did this diet and gave up - she dove for the bread on day three.
Anyone else on Atkins feel free to add or message me for moral support.

Hey I came on the forums just to see if others were still doing the Atkins diet. A trainer at my gym recommended the book "Why We get Fat" by Gary Taubes. While I haven't read through the book yet I did watch an hour long talk he gave which was pretty eye opening for me. It boiled down to, too much carbs are bad. So I'm avoiding bread, rice, potatoes and the likes.
I remembered this was the idea behind the Atkins diet as as well, so I just finished signing up on their site. Hopefully this will workout for me. I've done calorie counting before but never carb counting.
I wish you good luck!0 -

Hi Gwenna, I am doing the Atkins 1972 book -- it was stricter and didn't allow all the atkins bars and such (they didn't exist yet). I'm on day 4 and have lost 5 pounds.
I have done this diet before -- and it works. The trick is when you start to add carbs back after induction... that's when most people slip back into their old habits.
This time I have a plan for that. I've been reading Chris Powell's carb cycling book. It's basically cycling through a few low carb days followed by a high carb day where you can have pasta or bread or oatmeal or whatever you are craving. Then you follow up with another low carb day.
My plan is to do Atkins for two weeks and hopefully lose 10 lbs -- which will jumpstart me and make me feel good. Then followup with carb cycling, which seems a bit more livable.
You are doing great. Keep up the good work, and don't listen to the nay sayers about Atkins. I have seen this diet work for others, and for myself.0 -
In 2000, the third leading cause of death after Heart Disease and Cancer was Medical Care - ie: doctors either making mistakes and/or adverse reactions to the drugs they throw at you. 106,000 people died from "noxious, unintended and undesired effect of a drug which occurs at normal doses".
The point is, doctors aren't the be all and end all of nutritional or health knowledge they want you to think they are. Obviously they're important, and they have their place, but just because a doctor tells you it's ok to do the Adkins diet, doesn't make it "safe".
I know you don't want to hear it, so feel free to ignore this post, but do your research before you cling to fad diets that have been proven by the scientific community to do more harm than good.

hey hi Kiddo, I used the atkins diet quite a few years ago and the weight fell off. My downfall was ,like all other diets I did not stick to it. Good luck. and if does not work out try the old 1200calorie meal plan . It works oh and also track your food and exercise here every day . this app is a godsend.0

Drink lots of water. Be prepared to wake up with cotton mouth. Drink more water. Go easy on work outs, while your body adjusts it's a bit difficult to keep your energy levels up.
Googling Atkins forum will take you to a pretty good resource. Also there is an Atkins subforum here, as well as other low carb ones.
Later when you finish Induction, remember to exercise. Dr. Atkins said in his book that if you aren't exercising you aren't doing Atkins.
*Hands out tissues*
I know, I know, I wept when I read that, too. :laugh:0 -
I started induction two weeks ago. Lost 6lbs the first week, and according to the Wii I gained 2lbs the second week. I have stuck to the "rules" like never before with the exception of consuming enough of my daily caloric intake. I can tell I have lost some weight, my clothes fit differently, etc. I am participating in a 5k on Feb 23rd so I have been training for that by run/walking every other night for 45 minutes. Note I was not exercsing at all prior to starting infuction. I feel very down by the the supposed weight gain....any advice?0

Styront, don't get discouraged. Dr. Atkins wrote the tape measure is a better friend than the scale. I think the fact that your clothes are loose is a great motivator!
Could be water fluctuation or maybe getting "backed up" because of low fiber -- common on the induction week. If it's the latter, a cup of Smooth Move tea (avail in health food stores) before you go to bed will take care of it.
RE: exercise....I exercise every day. Boot camp m/w, spin class t/thur/fri, yoga on the weekends. Induction is tough on workouts. Drink lots of water and other non-carb fluids.0 -
When I did Atkins I found that adding fats (Mayo, sesame oil, avocado, etc.) after induction really helped too. The fats are great. After induction you can have some yummy veggies too, which help. Atkins really is a great fat-burner and some people love the food!
I've moved on to the Primal/Paleo idea of eating whole foods and cutting out the sugar and grains, though I do cheat often!
Good luck on your journey! Don't let the nay-sayers get to you; do what works for your life and your health. It's good to know you're in this with your doctor.0
