I have lost and maintained my weight (and lost a bit more in the last few months) for ONE YEAR!!!
I made the decision to finally do something about my weight when I peaked out at 199 lbs. (at 5'3") in the summer of 2008. A lot of things finally came together to make me decide to change. I can't pinpoint one exact thing, but one huge motivator was the realization that I had spent a majority of my 20's feeling so tired and unenergetic. I was the oldest 25 year old I knew! I didn't have the energy to carry my kids, go to the grocery store, take the kids to the park, etc. I would spend most afternoons just so exhausted and depressed everyday. I have always been overweight or obese--since I was about 7, but I'd usually just been on the chubby side--not a size 18 and climbing.
I lost my first 25 lbs. between the summer of 2008 and Christmas, when my brother was in a very serious accident that had me out of town for a lot of December. I maintained during that time, and also graduated from college that month. In January I got back on the wagon, and lost another 25 lbs. by May. I did all of it with LOTS of exercise and counting calories. I definitely wasn't perfect--I would fall off the wagon on a weekly basis, sometimes for a few days, but I just kept at it. My goal was to get to 145 lbs. which would put me in the healthy BMI range. I had never been in the 140's since about puberty, so that goal seemed really daunting. I was very scared I would gain it back, but over the last year I've successfully maintained it and in the last few months I dropped another 10 lbs. At this point I'd like to lose a little more, but I am healthy now, so really, that's just about my vanity
I want to say to those that are losing or maintaining that I do think there is one key to maintainig weight loss and that is exercise. Daily exercise, including strength training, is what I really credit with being able to keep the weight off (I do not credit exercise so much for the weight loss-that's all about the food). I don't always log my food, but I still work out faithfully almost everyday and set new fitness goals all the time. And I really believe the strength training and addition of lean muscle, has been why I don't have to be so strict about what I eat anymore. I used to think I had a very slow metabolism and gained weight easily--but I don't think I do anymore. I think I've totally changed my body's metabolism with my exercise.
Anyway, I'm pretty proud of myself --I've lost a few lbs. here and there in the past, but never been able to maintain it for more than a couple of months, but this time I can feel that I changed "me" forever. Thanks for letting me share!

Congrats!! That is an awesome accomplishment! I have struggled with maintaining in the past, but this time around I am losing the right way (healthy eating/daily exercise) so I know I will be able to maintain as long as I continue that! There is just no other way around it and I have finally figured that out!
Thanks for the inspiring story!! You should be proud!!0 -
Congrats! I just looked at your pictures, you look amazing!!! My goal is 50 lbs and for the the past several months I've really been struggling. I've stayed around 32-35 lbs lost since about Christmas. You really inspired me. Thank you :flowerforyou:0

Way to go!!! Thanks for the inspiration this morning0

Whoo Hoo! You need to go pick up two 25 lbs. dumbbells and walk around remembering what it use to be like.0

I started at 180 and my goal is 140. I'm in between right now and can't wait to weigh what I weighed in high school - and be SMALLER!! Thanks so much for sharing your story!0

Congratulations, that's awesome! I'm on the maintaining side now too and sometimes think it was easier to lose the weigth than it is to maintain. I have worried about the maintenance part all the way through. I've lost 48-50 lbs and feel great! I went 8-10 lbs under what my PA said my ideal weight was so that I'd have that to "play" with. I love the fact that I can share clothes with my 18 yr old daughter and I NEVER thought that would happen!
For those of you still on the journey keep on working on it. It is definitely worth it!!!
Congratulations again and keep up the good work!0 -
You rock! I have a similar situation to yours, trying to lose weight at the end of college last semester (lost 15 pounds) and now I'm kicking it into high gear to lose another 40-50 lbs. So far I'm down 16! You definitely motivated me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Great job! I can't wait to have a story like this when I reach my goal0

Congratulations!!! What a great success. Keep up the good work and positive attitude.0

Congratulation!!! Thanks for sharing. I have been loosing the same 10 lbs for last 6 years... Except it is so much harder to loose my weight as I am older. I am going to loose this time, and maintain my weight. I need to loose 30lbs...0

Well done! To know that you have maintained for one year is perhaps the most inspiring to me personally. I was a size 18 too and and looking to head into single digit territory in the next few months. I hope maybe in about a year and a few months, I can post a topic just like yours. Congrats on your accomplishments and for getting a lot people moving in the right direction today!0

Having used healthy diets and exercise to get down to my goal weight and then regained it all back and having done this more times than I can remember for 40 years, I have to shout out a "YES" that it is harder to maintain the weight loss than it is to lose it. You hardly ever hear about this on any of the diet programs, the TV shows and the magazine stories about big losers. A big reason for this is because just about everybody who loses weight gains it back. And while you're losing it, you're convinced that this is the last time. Even this time, my umpteenth go-around, I'm still convinced that this is the last time.
So I really want to thank you for sharing your one year anniversary with us. I wish more people who have reached maintenance would do the same. Yours is the real success.0 -
You look awesome!

My first grader is 50 lbs. so I always joke that I lost a first grader! I had a bittersweet moment one day a few months ago....we were at his piano lesson which is on a university campus. We always have a long walk back to the car, and he was running, tripped, and ate concrete pretty bad. His knees were all bloody and he was just hysterical. I picked him up started carrying him back to the car. It was probably 1/2 mile back. It didn't hit me until we were almost there, that I had stopped carrying him when he learned how to walk, because I was so out of shape that I would get so winded and exhausted. I used to avoid any kind of activity that would require me to carry my kids around :frown: And here I was, carrying him, at 6 years old, also lugging a backpack and holding my other child's hand, and I could do that and not even get tired. You just don't realize how much being overweight and not fit affects you and everyone around you!0
