That much salt in one soup?

Thats more than I eat in one day!

How can a soup contain that much!

The average person needs about 2300 mg of sodium a day... http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sodium/NU00284

I eat Progresso soup for lunch often and still manage to be under my limit of sodium on most days.

Well I never knew that! I decided to add my sodium count to my diary and looking back never come to my goal of 2500. The most I have got to is 2000 just the once. Today is 500

    Totally fluctuations in figures!

No one needs 2300 mg of sodium -- that is an upper limit suggestion. And whoever said 1500 is necessary for basic functions is wrong as well. 500 is what's necessary for basic functions. I have heard that heavy exercisers need more.

well according to my doctors (all specialists in their field, heads of the department, etc.) as well as the literature i've read - 1500 is what is necessary for basic bodily functions.

From the Mayo Clinic article quoted above:
"Sodium: How much do you need?
The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day — or 1,500 mg if you're age 51 or older, or if you are black, or if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease.

Keep in mind that these are upper limits, and less is usually best, especially if you're sensitive to the effects of sodium. If you aren't sure how much sodium your diet should include, talk to your doctor. "

Those are not requirements, those are limits. Don't treat them like the speed limit. These limits are meant to not be gone over :)

I had a HUGE hot salad for lunch that came for about 260 cals.

2 cups finely blended cabbage (raw)
    2 tablespoons cottage cheese
    1/3 cup corn kernals
    2 cups spinach
    one grilled chicken breast(chopped)
    one large tomateo (diced)

put all ingredients into the frypan (not the spinach or cottage cheese) and fry them all up nice and hot. add the spinach in at the end so its kinda of half wilted. top with the cottage cheese then mix in.
Made a HUGE plate of salad, and the finely chopped cabbage you dont even taste but its give you the nutrients.

i love it for lunch but it might be a bit more filling tha soup. it filled me right up

I don't add salt to much of anything, but otherwise don't worry all that much about sodium. as has been mentioned, drink lots of water and it balances out.

(in fact, I just took sodium off my diary. it just annoyed me to see it go over constantly when everything else was under and I was losing weight just fine.)

Ok, this is coming from someone who occassionaly eats food with her salt. I haven't cut back my salt intake at all since I started eating healthier (I know, shame on me) and I still am loosing weight. Sure it will make you bloated sometimes, but that goes away. Just drink plenty of liquids! Hope that helps. Go ahead and enjoy that soup!

This is going to sound very gross but I ran into a problem one night. I was out of weight watchers and had soup. It was not low sodium:( So I opened the can and washed off the soup. Then cooked it in the water I added. I don't know if this helped any, but I was desperate! The things we do when were hungry:(

Join me in a campaign to get Progresso to reduce the sodium in all their soups. I agree it's wonderful soup and sometimes like to scarf a whole can as dinner. But I just can't bring myself to look at the label and think about the salt I'm taking in. Fine that they have a few low-sodium soups, but I want my loaded potato and other extravagances once in a while. Here's where you can email your comments:

Soup is great for dieters - a low-cal but filling hot, comfort meal!

If you want lower salt, can you just make your own soups? I have found this to be a great way to customize meals to my nutritional goals and lower my sodium. Soups are easy to make, especially now with all of the precut fresh and frozen veggies out there - if you are really pressed for time.

You inspired me to make one tonight with leftover chicken!

Canned soups are just so horrible on sodium, if you are regularly under I don't see an issue but might be a good idea to make big pots of soup and freeze them for times like these :) Less sodium and you can add all the protein, grains and veggies you want.

Sounds like a lot of processed junk, just because it's low calorie doesn't make it good for you. Go to the produce section and the meat case and buy some real food.

Won't hurt for one day! Just don't weigh tomorrow and freak out! I enjoy home made salty soups regularly such as chicken noodle and pea and ham. In drink plenty of water on those days and just make sure I don't weigh in the day after. Hasn't killed me yet!

I would make homemade soup like some others have suggested. It's so easy and you know the exact ingredients that are going in it. I make my own all the time with homemade chicken broth that I add ZERO salt to. Instead of salt I use garlic, onion, red pepper flakes, black pepper and italian seasonings to make my soups taste amazing. You can add the veggies you prefer, some of my favorites to add to soups are zucchini, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, etc. You can make a big batch in the crockpot or on the stove and freeze some for later. There are so many healthy and wholesome soup recipes on the internet, the possibilities are endless!
