For what kinds of exercise? If you're going to mostly run, walk, or bike, I'd recommend a Garmin or other watch with GPS. But if you're going to be mostly in the gym, Polars are excellent.

I had a Polar for a few years, then when I started running more got a Garmin 405CX for Christmas. Both were/are great and will track heart rate and calories, but for outdoor stuff the GPS on the Garmin is incredibly useful. It will give you distance, pace, and a way to find your way home if you get lost.

My wife was looking at GPS watches but we wound up just going with some running apps for her smartphone since it already has a GPS. Now we're just trying to decide on a decent HRM watch. I'm also interested if people have recommendations for a decent one.

The garmin forerunner range are quite good I have had a forerunner 305 for a few years now and it is excellent includes GPS and HRM. These are old versions now and the neweer watches are much slimmer, bit pricey though.

I have a POLAR 4. Extremely easy to use & love it. It is not super fancy but tracks calories and heart rate.
