I am new to this site and just learning how to use it. I'm getting married in April and just want to shed a few extra LBs! I've been working out and calorie counting in my head, without the results I'm really looking for, hoping this site will help.

The reason I post is because I do hot yoga and I feel the exercise yoga they have posted is less than how much you actally burn in hot yoga, and they don't have a hot yoga choice. Does anyone know how much you could burn in a one hour hot yoga class? Thanks for your help!

I had the same question and found this link which breaks it down by your weight.

Interesting that vinyasa flow burns so much, I might switch!

I have heard that actual calorie burn may be closer to what MFP has. I read an article saying that the heat and humidity in the room alone cause the heart rate to elevate, meaning that even if you sat in childs pose the entire class, your HRM might tell you you burned 300-400 calories. I have also been trying to find a good way to measure calorie burn from hot vinyasa (power) yoga. I have been going with MFP, so I don't unknowingly go over my calories.
  • Thanks for both suggestions. I believe it about the increased heart rate because there are times where I'm just standing In a pose and I can fell my heart running. It is a great way to work out hard and calm down at the same time! I'm addicted! Someone told me if I'm trying to drop weight to still do cardio like running and biking (I'm not a great runner) but I feel as if I work out harder in bikram yoga?

Vinyasa is much more like a dance class, less like yoga, in my opinion. My HR sky rockets during a Vinyasa class. We do it in 93.5 degrees - not considered hot, but it's hot to me! I have never worn my HRM during a class but I can see on Wednesday morning if you want? I know it isn't going to be accurate for everyone, but it might give an idea?

    I am 5'4, 138 lbs, 35 years old.

Interesting about child's pose and the HRM/calories. Now I am super curious!
  • Yeah I am very interested in knowing how much it is.
  • i also do hot yoga & bikram & i understand what your saying. when i joined MFP a couple weeks ago i noticed it wasnt listed in the exersises so i tried to look up online and there are whole forums & articles arguing over the effects of hot yoga. most say its not the calorie burn that people think it is. Others say its more. I love my hot yoga classes so im more inclined to be defensive of them. yes to some it might seem like not a huge work out. but when i started three months ago my first class made every muscle in my body ache for a week!!!! then the more i went the more i noticed i felt AMAZING after class.Im standing up straighter, my back & joints dont hurt as bad, i can FEEL the detox from sweating the crap outta my body three times a week. i started at 245 & am now 238(christmas & some whisky drinking got in the way :)) Ive lost a pants size. And the only thing ive changed in my routine is that yoga class,( trying to work on adding more, but baby steps). while i have not yet put a HRM on in class there no way your not getting some good benefit out of it & if you ever seen what shape most of the yoga instructor are in? thats gotta say something. so looking at a couple different sites i put my hot yoga as bout a 595 burn for an hour class(my heart rate does get up there). it was a number in the middle of what i saw posted online, this way i dont feel like im over estimating it, but the important part is if it makes you feel good keep doing it. dont not do it cause it doesnt have a huge calorie burn. its got other benefits too

Per my HRM, I burned 399 calories today in Vinyasa. I am curious about sitting in child's pose in a hot room, so I may literally just do that next time I go just out of curiosity.

agarret6, I mostly agree with you, I work my butt off and my muscles are shaking and I am spent after each class, and that HAS to be worth a decent calorie burn right??. I have done vinyasa yoga about 2x a week in addition to my regular cardio and I have seen a difference in my body. However, during that time I was putting yoga in as what it is on MFP. My thought is that aside from my shoulders and arms, I sometimes wonder if some of my soreness could be from getting such deep stretches while warm and in the heat. Also, in the high temps obviously you are going to sweat more and get rid of some water weight immediately, and that sweat may not totally be related to calorie burn. For me, I don't go to yoga mainly to burn calories, I go for the detox, mental clarity, inner strength and confidence and afterglow that I get from it, among other things. In fact, sometimes if I can make it to yoga it's just a bonus on top of my other work outs. However, if I am taking the time to log everything I eat and every workout I do, there should be a more accurate answer out there.

I wear my bodymedia fit to Bikram and it tells me pretty consistently that I burn 185 - 200 calories for the 90 minute class. I get the same burn doing similar Bikram-style yoga at another studio without the heated room. I was really disappointed when I found this out because I was expecting a much higher burn. Some reading I did afterward suggest that the burn isn't as high as some sites report because the raise in heart rate is due to the heat and not aerobic activity. Also, the stretches are static - they feel like a lot of work, but you aren't moving your muscles. I can't say which theories are true and which aren't , but I can say that I'm not getting a high calorie burn on my BodyMedia Fit. I think the results that I see on the BodyMedia are pretty consistent with MFP's estimates (211 calories for 90 minues). Even with the low calorie burn, Bikram makes me feel great. One benefit is that it makes me feel much more aware of my body, so maybe I eat a little less afterward.

I also wear the BodyMedia to vinyasa and burn 300 to 350 for the 75 minute class.

according to my hrm, (polar4) my 90 minute hot yoga class burns 1060 calories. my instructor often tells people that the calories burned is equivalent to a 90 minute spin class.

I did Bikram Yoga (90 minute classes) for about 8 months straight where I went about 5 times a week. Some weeks 4 times other times 6 weeks. Bikram Yoga is hard for sure, and it makes you feel like you have been tortured and run through the mill, but you feel SO good afterwards that you go back. It definitely helped me with strength in my back and legs, but did nothing for my abs/core and arms. I also went from about 121/122 lbs up to 124 lbs and stayed there. I didn't lose the weight I was expecting to lose; however, I still think it is awesome. I would agree that you don't burn as many calories as you think you burn.

I do a lot of barre dvd's at my house. Some of them are really difficult, and my legs are shaking while I am doing them. The max I burn on those is 300 cals per hour. The burn is anywhere from 175 to 300 cals. There isn't a ton of moving in Bikram and there is a lot of holding poses. The cal burn porbably isn't that high. Add some cardio if you want to lose weight.

I wore my HRM to a 75 minute hot yoga class and I supposedly burned 357 calories (5'6", 160 lbs 28yo f) but I think that's probably high......

I do Hot Bikram Yoga regularly and in Jan completed the 30 day challenge and lost 7lbs while at it. Also more than weight loss I lost a lot of inches around my waist.

I wear my HRM to class and depenidng on my effort I can burn up to 900 calories in a class but now I burn less as I'm more used to it.

I've written up a blog as so many of my friends asked me about it on MFP check if out if you like:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Silvara_11

Don't believe what they say about it not being real burn - I ate back the calories I burned and lost consistent weight and inches doing it and it is my main form of exercise and I swear by it.

Good luck in getting trim for your big day!!
