Water retention, big weight gain?!

A couple of days ago I had a few pieces of cake at a celebration, probably around 1800 calories worth, the day after I was a kilo heavier, and today I woke up another kilo heavier 2 kilos in as many days?
What can I do? I know some people say not to weigh yourself every day but I need to, it keeps me grounded but this is a big blow. I feel super depressed now!
Is this due to having so much sugar, etc. because generally I have next to none.
HELP.

Well. First off, are you female? Because if you are, we gain weight like crazy as we near our TOM. I personally have gained four pounds in the past week as I'm due to hit my cycle any day now. That can account for a large change in weight, and it happens FAST.

Yes, I am a female! I'm not due to get my period for another 2 weeks!
I'm a little distraught at the whole thing, I had lost 7 kilos (14 pounds) but all of a sudden I've gained back 2?!
  • It's water (glycogen), don't stress.

Thank you so much, I appreciate it. You look amazing by the way!
  • Caffeine and alcohol are great diuretics. Dropping carbs to below 50 or completely will drop water also.

It's water. Even if your cycle is due in 2 weeks. Your body can start to prepare.

like everyone says... its WATER! Carbs/sugar require a lot of water so you hold on to it.

Now... step away from cake and when you do have cake... the key word to meditate on PRIOR to the event... SELF CONTROL, PORTION CONTROL, BALANCE... What do you want? not 1800 calories of cake at one sitting! Shake it off.. Today is a new day!

Thank you so much everyone, I'm feeling so much better now. I love this community!
  • Drinking more water will also reduce weight gain due to water retention. Water is also a natural diuretic. Seems like a contradiction, but it works.

I, too, experience these weight gains. I really have to watch salt intake; I avoid nearly all processed foods, and drink a fair amount of water each day. I also find that on days I exercise, I have less fluid retention.

I'm hoping this is the case and it will just drop off once I'm back into my routine.

Let's face it, our minds work in strange ways. I would have had to over eaten 15000 calories over my intake to gain 2 kilos, which I didn't do, yet I still feel terrible.

I have ben dealing with this issue for so long and it doesn't seem to go away no matter what I do, Its very frustrating. Ive upped calories to lose more weight and yet the scale goes up and down 2-4 pounds and never just stays down. I get so frustrated that I want to quit and just binge but I don't. I no longer have TOM so that is not the issue ever.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this issue ?

This is actually exactly why I weigh myself every day. If I only weighed myself once a week and saw that I had a gain or no change I would feel worse then seeing it in one day. By weighing daily I can then eventually see the daily fluctuations in weight and not get concerned. Once you see it happen a few times and see it come down after it is easy to realize it is just water weight which doesn't affect the overall trend or fat loss..

Tizzz, I know exactly how you feel! Add me if you like. I know a lot of people frown on it, but I reduced my calorie intake a lot. My Dr and I found that it works best for me to lose weight and that I won't put it back on because I've made the lifestyle change. Maybe see your Doctor and have a chat. And the fact that I don't get hungry helps. It's just water weight hun, if you've read the rest of this thread you would have seen that I put on 2, I woke up this morning and I've already lost a whole kilo (2 pounds). It WILL be worth it.

htimsm87! YES! No one understands why I weigh everyday, but it honestly the thing that has kept me MOST motivated to keep going!

I disagree. I definitely want 1800 calories worth of cake! Mmmmm.

OP - Don't fret! I weigh myself every day as well, but in order to do that and stay sane you need to make yourself a nice graph in excel. That way you can see the downward trend of your weight even when it's bouncing up and down.

Sodium and TOM seriously screw with your number. Here is my last week and a half:
    123.2
    123.6
    124.0
    124.2
    124.2
    124.0
    125.6
    125.4
    124.6
    123.2
    122.6

    Our bodies be crazy, yo!

Ive heard people say to take water pills to get rid of the water gain issue or Dandilion root pills or tea, not sure if they work.
My herb store recommended something called Water out and says it works great but since i had a heart stent put in Oct 25th of 2012 and am now on blood thinners i have to be very cautious as to what I take along with my blood thinners so I don't have any other issues.

The cake and extra carbs caused glycigen storage

    http://www.justinowings.com/understanding-bodyweight-and-glycogen-de/

you didn't eat 7000 extra calories over maintenence, so the 2lb gain is not 2lbs of fat.

If you are going to weigh yourself daily, you have to understand the reasons for fluctuations, or you will drive yourself crazy.

Thank you, will look at that article, I just wish I could get the scale to go down and stay down, like this morning I got on scale and it showed i dropped 2 pounds, very frustrating going up and down
  • I ate heavy last Friday and Saturday. Friday we ate at Texas Roadhouse and Saturday we had pizza both=sodium and high calorie/carb. My weight went up and it's just come back down a week later. I don't think I'll do that again! lol

As others have already said - it's water weight. Bump up your water consumption, maybe have some green tea, and you'll be back to normal in no time.

Man, cake sounds really good right about now!

It's not just the ladies...here's my week from my last weigh in to my official logged today:

187.4 (official logged weight last Friday
    188
    187.7
    188.5
    188.2
    185.6 (today's official logged weight)

OP...like everyone else on the planet, you are going to have natural body weight fluctuations....this even happens at maintenance, nobody weighs exactly xxx Lbs all of the time linearly. You have water retention/release...timing of food in/out...timing of fluids in/out...hormones...etc, etc, etc. It's normal...don't fret.

Thank you everyone so much for all the new information and for being so kind!

As it stand today 3 or 4 days after the 2 kilo gain I only have about 500 grams (1 pound) to lose before I'm back to the original weight and I can actually start losing again!

Our bodies are crazy, it's taking a lot of getting used to on my part, that's for sure.
