Drinking water late at night - help or hindrance?

Hello all
Decided to come back on MFP for the few months leading up to my wedding. Using MFP this time last year I went from over 19 stone to 15 stone(I'm 6 foot 5) before settling at a weight around about 15 and a half. An indulgent Christmas/New Year has seen me go up to just over 16 and I want to lose between half a stone and stone for my big day.
With so much weight to lose last time I found motivation very easy as with little effort I dropped 8 pounds in week 1 and just took it from there. This time I'm needing that initial boost of a weight loss to get me going again - I hope this makes sense, it does in my head!
I've been doing fine up until about 8/9pm each night. Missus has been working long hours so is often in bed early and I've been struggling not to eat(binge almost) and undo all the good work my diet and exercise has done for that day. In an attempt to remedy this I've been tanning pints of water at night for the last few nights and it's stop me wanting to eat. Is this a sensible thing to do or am I foolish going to bed full of water?
If this isn't a wise move can anyone suggest some tips/ideas to stop me from eating after my evening meal? Cutting this practice out was a major factor in shifting the weight initially, so I’d like to get back to that way of thinking.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The only possible downside is having to get up in the middle of the night to pee.0

Thanks - worried that I was being foolish.0 -
Something is wrong if you are feeling that deprived. Distribute your calories differently so that you save more of them for the evening. Are you eating high calorie foods during the day and then left unable to snack in the evening? If you find yourself mindlessly eating, take a look at what you are doing that triggers it. Television tends to make us eat. The commercials have us responding like Pavlov's dogs, ready to run to the refrigerator every 20 minutes. Perhaps find low cal snacks for those times, or find other things to do in the evening. Be sure you are exercising enough to allow you the exra calories to have a reasonable snack at night. Are you eating out of boredom or hunger?0

Also remember you are changing a habit of oversnacking, which will take time. Replace the habit with herbal tea or carrot sticks, or keeping your hands busy in another way.0

Red Wine it's boredom really. The thing is I have enough calories to have a snack in the evening but that often triggers me to want more - I possibly need to change what snacks are available in the house. Last time I found sugar free jelly gave me that sweet kick and was relatively cheap calories wise.
I'm trying to replicate what I did this time last year - next to no snacks/all crap out of the house/nothing after 7 - and maybe I don't need to be as strict on myself as I've a lot less to lose this time?0
