i want to gain because i feel embarrased

This is probably a silly question but I joined here to gain. I'm happy with myself in that I feel like I'm healthier than my friends but I feel embarrassed because I look frail standing next to most people. Im 6'5" 140 , I know that's small but is that wrong for being the reason I want to gain. And also that my 12 year old nephew weight 10 lbs more at 5'1". Lol

I think wanting to gain is a very realistic goal for you if you are looking to gain muscle. Concentrate on getting your calories from healthy sources and get to the gym to build that muscle.
  • That's a good question. Most people want to lose weight because they feel big compared to others so it can be the other way around also. My boyfriend is in a similar situation he feels healthy but thinks he's puny around others. Just do what feels right

You want to gain some muscle, man??? GOOD, THATS REAL GOOD.

In all seriousness. Go look at NerdFitness. They have some good stuff about bulking.
You'll want to be doing no cardio, lots of weightlifting (http://stronglifts.com/ is really good) and eating A LOT! If you're not sure how much to eat, work out your TDEE then add 250cals. Start there are see.
Give it time, and it'll happen

Well, if you feel uncomfortable with your body, you should have the right to change it. If you're unhappy with how slim you are even though you are healthy, I think it's perfectly reasonable to want to gain a bit in an equally healthy way. Do what makes you happy.
  • although some people lose/gain weight for health and fitness, a lot do it just to look a certain way. Im fit but I want to be smaller, you're fit and you want to be bigger. looking a certain way can be a big motivation too and there's nothing wrong with that.

There is no "right reason" - while a lot of people are trying to improve their health by losing weight, a lot of us are doing it to look good naked. Same thing applies to if you want to gain. You can gain for more strength, better looks, more confidence, better health, whatever - it doesn't matter what your reason is, just that you have one, and that you would consider doing this an improvement to your body.

    You gotta want it!

If you are healthy and happy, why would you?

My husband is a couple inches taller than you and apparently was always very, very thin growing up. Before he met me, he started lifting at the gym because he was tired of how he looked/felt. I don't think he was necessarily UNHAPPY with himself... he just knew he could look even better. He started lifting weights, getting more protein, and actually got a lot bigger.

I love to cook, so when I came into the picture, his diet got a lot better too, which helped his physique. Now I'm reaping the benefits *touches fingers together dramatically*...

Your reason for being here is a perfectly good one. Check things out, see if you like the direction you're headed, and give it an honest effort. You might like what you end up with!

If you feel a need, any reason is a good reason.

Self esteem is tied to a lot of things, one of which is how we feel in relation to others. I think you look good the way you are - and I'm sure your friends do, too. But it is about what YOU think. You will find you actually have a boost in your mood if you start getting more protein, more food in general, and start working out.

It's really common for younger men to still be very slim. Unless you do some weight-lifting, it is just your natural physique. Luckily we all look a little different - what a boring world if everyone were built exactly the same!
  • GAIN BROTHER!
Shovel food into your mouth like no other.
It will be hard to keep a clean bulking diet because of the limited calories.
Limit your cardio and lift some weights.
You have a lot of potential to gain.

Friend of mine was in your place. Best thing he did was consult a doctor and worked up an exercise and meal plan. Worked out great for him. Blood work every 3 months and monthly 'check ins' to make sure all was ok and the gains were coming on.

Do yourself a favor, work with a professional

Figure out your TDEE then add around 200-300 calories. Figure out a weekly lifting routine. Throw a bit of cardio in there but not too much. You'll see results.

I would say consult with a physician before doing anything. Just to make sure your weight isn't medically related to anything.

I'll say this about that. Many people use avatars that are similar to them now or similar to their goal. He wouldn't be the only person here posting under a meme

He said it *was* his pic on his other thread re his arms.
I'm trying to gain muscle all over but what are the best exercises to increase the size of my arms? My new profile pic shows how bad I need some muscle.
