Spirulina

Does anyone use this supplement? I was watching Foodmatters last night on Netflix and this caught my eye. I looked into it and it all sounds great. If you have used it, what is your experience with it? Which brand?

I'm willing to give it a try but not sure where to start.

  • I just started taking spirulina myself. I listened to a podcast on it that weighed the pro and cons. Basically what I got from it is that it does have a lot of health benefits including a good source minerals and vitamins, but it can be really expensive. If you are eating a well balance diet, you really don't need it. If you have the extra money to spend, it may be worth a try. Also, it can be a good source of plant based protein for vegitarians and vegans.

I have not used it before, but saw it mentioned on the Young and Raw website at part of the 30 green smoothie challenge I just joined. I just ordered from nuts.com, organic for $14.99/lb. Not really anymore expensive than other protein powders.

I have some. It has a definite fishy smell that is difficult for some people to get past. It's pretty hard to disguise the smell in other food. I just put a teaspoon in a small glass of water and chug it without breathing in. I don't know if I notice any benefits. It can't hurt, I suppose.
