I registered for my first ever 5K!

I'm going to run my first 5K on St. Patrick's day morning, right in my neighborhood. I'm really excited. I've never done any kind of race or really organized athletic event of any kind.

I was running off and on in the summer/fall, and I've been doing the couch to 5K program on the treadmill (it's way too cold outside). I'm only on week 4 right now, but I still 5 weeks before the event! I'm sure with the excitement/encouragement I'll be able to run the whole thing if I keep to a running schedule before then!

Congratulations!! Even if you walk a little, you will be impressed with your average pace - the adrenalin from the race really kicks in.

Good for you. I ran my first one last November and I am thinking about running one around the same time you are.

Just remember that you are not racing everyone around you and save some speed for the last half mile, when you will really need it.

It's addictive :) You do one and then you want to do more, and then do more distance, then one day it will be the wanting of doing a marathon :P

Congrats on signing up for your first, you will love passing that finish line!

Congrats! I think you'll enjoy it! The adrenaline will be crazy on race-day so make sure you force yourself to start slow. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do great!

Watch out. . . those pesky 5Ks can get addicting!!!! Next thing ya' know. . .you'll be training for a half marathon. Or. . .wait. . .maybe that was me.

Have a BLAST. I'm doing a race on St. Patty's day, too! Hope the weather is a tad bit warmer by then!!!

    :-)
  • Good luck!! It sounds like you have a great plan for being in shape for it!

Funny story about my first 5K: I "ran" my first with my husband (fiance at the time). I was able to jog a decent 5K by the time the race came around and so I flew to Colorado (where he lived) from Louisiana (where I lived). The altitude change was killer and after the first mile I had to walk. There were little old ladies speed-walking past me as I gasped for air. LOL I didn't give up though and I finished that 5K!

We've run more since then and are scheduled for one this April. Fun times!
  • Careful...Finish lines are addictive!

Good for you! You won't regret it. I did C25K as well and I can't remember what week it is but once you get through the first 20 min run you will take off from there. I am currently up to running 4-5 miles on the treadmill and the first 20 minutes are STILL the hardest. After the first 20, it gets easier. You will do 25, then 30, then before you know it you will be finishing a 5K!
  • Congratulations! Just finished C25K myself and moved to Bridge to 10K. You can totally do it! I am running my first 5K in the beginning of April. Good luck!

That will be next week for me. That's where I've quit before, when I started the program. But now that I'm actually signed up for a race, I can't quit! I know I've run 20 minutes outdoors before (although I've never actually timed it...I once got up to running over 2 miles, which I'm sure was well over 20 minutes at my pace). But on the treadmill it's just such a different mental game. I get so bored! Even with music and TV, etc. It's a challenge. And we're supposed to get like 2 feet of snow here tomorrow, so running outdoors is not practical in the short term!

One more question for you guys: I'm going to be running it alone (at least, as of now, I don't have anyone I know who wants to run). Does that make me some kind of freak loser? Is it going to be totally awkward? Or will there be lots of people there alone? I mean, I'll have someone to meet me at the finishline, etc.. But no one actually DOING it with me.

I hope it doesn't make you a freak loser! I've had lots of races that I have not only run by myself, but had no one at the finish line. Actually I don't mind being by myself b/c it means that either (a) I am not holding someone else up from going faster so they can stay with me or (b) I am not going slower than I want to stay pace with someone slower than me.

And to repeat everyone else...it's addictive! I've done everything from 5ks to Half Marathons to a Warrior Dash this past weekend. For 2013 my goal is to do an official race every month. I've already done three!

If that makes you a freak loser, well then freak losers unite because my first 5k is April 13th and I'll be driving there, running, crossing the finish line and driving home all alone. The race is about 3 miles driving distance from my house and I'm almost sure my husband and girls are not getting up that early. They are supportive but I'm not even going to ask them and I'm okay with that.

I'm in Week 3 of my training and am also training on the treadmill (still too cold outside). I've been trying to run a 5k for about 3 years, but every time the date would come around, something else would come up or my training would get off track and I would just say "forget it". I'm determined this time to run and finish. I'm so excited!

It's just over a month away, I'm nervous! I'd love to be able to run the whole thing, but I'm not sure if that'll be feasible. I think it will come down to how much I manage to train over the next few weeks. I'm going on vacation the first week in March (a resort in Mexico)--this is great motivation to actually work out while I'm there, so hopefully I will!

Just about to start week 5 of the Couch to 5K. I'm really glad I started back at the beginning even though it was really easy, because it's kept me motivated to see the progress and my speed has definitely been up from where I was a year or so ago when I tried it before. This is the week that has the first "run for 20 minutes" session. That's so intimidating to me!

Don't be nervous...have fun with it!You can plan to run it all, but still be pleased with your results if you don't. You are only competing against yourself.

I haven't been posted much lately, because I haven't been as consistent as I should be with either my eating or my exercise. Not bad, but not necessarily good either.

BUT....I ran the 5K yesterday! I finished in 32:58! I had to walk for like a minute because I hadn't practiced any hills, and there were some hills in the course, but otherwise ran the whole thing. I can't wait to do another one!
