Check your employee handbook. Besides the job I'm at now, every job I've had expected you to show up even if you are at death's door unless you had a doctor's note.0

Why wouldn't you want to work when you're sick, misery loves company right? I always go in when I'm feeling bad and save my sick days for when I feel good so I can enjoy them.
But seriously, you're asking in the wrong forum, that's more of a legal question for an attorney message board. An attorney would probably say that
1. it depends on the labor laws in your state
2. whether or not you have a contract with your employer, if not see #1.
Now if you are really sick and can get a doctor to sign off on a FMLA, (Family Medical Leave Act) then your employer legally can not do anything to you. if you at least get a Doctor's note stating you were not able to work, your employer may make an allowance but may not.
My niece recently got a bad case of the flu and missed a week of work, on the 4th day, a Thursday, her employer told her to get her butt in to work but she was still too sick, the following Monday she went in to work and was immediately fired which in the State she lived in they had every legal right to do.
If it were me, I would go to work and cough all over my bosses computer keyboard when he wasn't looking.0 -

my husband works at a job that its really hard to call in sick to. he has a cold so i stuff him with dayquil and send him on his way. he makes it thru the day, comes home and collapses, i make him hot tea and soup. we have repeated this three days now.. finally hes getting better.0

Don't be such a baby, it's only a cold.
Or "the cold".0 -

This.
Besides, coming in sick shows your employer that you're dedicated to your job. If you're too sick someone else will probably complain and they'll send you home anyway. Plus, if you show up sick now your boss is more likely to believe that you're deathly ill next time you call off.0
