So my bf wants to take me bikini shopping...

Last night my bf says out of the blue, "Hun, have you noticed you lost a ton of weight?"
I reply, "Yes, it was intentional." Like how could I not notice? I know what he meant though. I have lost about 40 pounds since we met a year and a half ago.
He comes back with, "We need to go bikini shopping."
Honestly, I still have a little bit of a jelly belly and not sure how good I'd look in a bikini. He says I have a toned belly and I'd like to have his vision checked. I've been overweight all my life and honestly I'm having a hard time shaking the "fat girl" mentality out of my head. So I figure I'll accept his offer and go try on some bikinis when they start popping up in the store, which should be soon as the stores are always a season ahead on EVERYTHING. :P
That being saaaaid, does anybody know what style of bikini would look good on an petite hourglass lady? Or where is the best place to shop for one? I'd need a little bust support too. I'm between a 14-16 at the moment. I don't really want to spend a fortune on one either. Thanks for the help in advance!

He wants to take you bikini shopping and you are considering saying no?? Do it.0

:my opinion ...and it's only that! If you feel like you still have a "jelly belly" you are only going to be self-conscious in a 2 piece that shows it off. Maybe a tankini.....or one of the retro bikinis like Katy Perry wears that come up high? There are tons of flattering suits, but I think your "friend" may want to get into your knickers0

Oh my god, I laughed so hard "have you noticed you have lost 40 pounds???" ummmmmmm Yeah to bikinies that said, i would never go clothes shoppiing w my significant other....those lights in the dressing room are pretty terrible....you could mail order a bunch, try them on at home, and show him the ones that really flatter you....you would have much more control over the expereince that way....0

If my finace offered to buy me clothes, I'd be all over it! Sounds to me like he wants to show you off
If you're not comfortable with your stomach, you could try a 50's style high waisted bikini? With a halterneck top, it'll draw attention to your waist instead of your stomach, and you can get ones with control panels for the bit of extra tummy support.0 -

I probably will...if nothing else than to say "See, I told you I look bad in theeese?" But he'll probably still say I look good. He even offered to help with the extra sunscreen I'll need since I'm so deathly pale. :P0 -

...um, since he's already my boyfriend I think I know that.
But yeah, I'll probably look for something high waisted.0 -

Yeah, I'll probably go in by myself and just send pics to his phone. "Yes, no, OH GOD NO! I'm not even sending a pic so don't assssk!" :laugh:0 -
I struggle with wearing a bikini even thought I've lost a lot of weight. I understand about "jelly belly," because that's how I feel even though my husband also says it looks good. I agree with some of the other posters. A higher waisted bottom (I was even lucky enough to find a pair of bottoms that are similar to shorts which I am totally comfortable running around in on the beach - playing frisbee, etc) and a halter top. Both allow me to get some sun on the tummy, but also make me feel like the parts I'm sensitive about are covered up and not going to pop out.
If he's buying, go for it!! You might have to try some different styles, but it's a great reward to rock a bikini after working so hard to drop the pounds!! :smokin:0 -

Probably. Since his family invited me to go to the beach this summer, he wants to show them he has a cutie pie.
Oooo, I like tummy support!
I have to go to work, I'll be back in about 10 hours, play nice everyone.0 -

I got this funny image of some kind of divine bikini speaking to me, "try me on, it is your DESTINY!" Lol0 -

Um....I may post some depending on how the trip goes. It won't be for a while yet though. I will probably post it in one of those bikini pic threads that pop up every now and then. :-P0 -
Get a spray tan or some sunless tanner....you won't look cute under dressing room lights if you're deathly pale0

I agree with the suggestion of a 50s style suit. Another cut you can consider are hipster cut (boy shorts) bottoms. You could also choose a monokini for variety (eg. Herve Leger Cross Front Bandage Monokini Suit). There are some flattering tankinis on the market too(eg La Blanca - Has a peeping belly, but not too much where you may get self conscious). And with a proper bikini(even high waisted as recommended above), consider coveralls. Have fun with it and enjoy shopping with your man.
ETA: boy shorts.0 -
Take it as a compliment. My wife always makes a point that I repeat. String bikinis are the most flattering because they are so adjustable you can basically "put them" where you want them.

I saw some ADORABLE bikinis at Victoria's Secret last week. The good thing about them is that most of them had underwire and a little padding for extra support.0

Just adore those clueless men...but he clearly loves you and is thrilled about what you've been doing.
Take a look at modcloth online Lots of different types of suits, and you can mix and match the tops and bottoms. More modest styles are in now, so you can get a bikini top and a full-brief-style bottom. Or all kinds of things.
For support, those bandeau tops with straps have worked great for my DD-cup daughter. they have the bikini look, they minimize, they support, they're very flattering.
and congratulations on your stunning accomplishment!0 -
I've been thinking about maybe venturing into bikini territory myself this summer. Your post motivated me to look into what I might be willing to wear:

I usually get bikinis from a store called La Vie En Rose Aqua (but I don't know if that is just a Canadian store).
Congratulations on your weight loss, btw. :drinker:0 -

This is what I was going to suggest. Order it online and surprise him once you are comfortable?0 -
Kohl's has a decent selection if you go early enough in the season. If he wants to take you shopping, let him! And be confident - men see us as a package; they don't notice every flaw like we do. So don't point them out! Have a great time. (Then go back and buy the one you really want!)
Congrats on your terrific loss!0 -

Yeeeah I have had bad experiences with spray tans. Streaks everywhere! Besides I like being pale, I just gotta apply sunscreen every hour on the hour to keep my Nicole Kidman skin. :-P0 -

That's a good way to put it....I will try not to harsh his vibes with my nitpicks and keep my answers to yes or no.0
