new to weight training

So I've only ever used machines (and dumbbells for bicep curls and such) in my strength training. I've heard the more effective way to train is with free weights, but I don't know where to start with them. I don't have a partner to help me out either, since I work out on site at work at weird hours.
I have heard to lift heavy and do fewer reps, more sets. Any other tips?

Would love to know this as well. I love lifting but never feel like I am doing it correctly or getting the maximum benefits.0

Google for StrongLifts 5x5 or go to Amazon and order Starting Strength by Rippetoe. Also, it seems a lot of women are using New Rules of Lifting For Women.0

Your comment includes 'machines'. You are working out at a gym, correct? Ask for an intro session with a personal traininer. They can guide you toa basic work out and orient you to the equipment and propoer form.

There is a Group on MFP for Ladies who are New to Weight Lifting. They are using the Book New Rules of Weight Lifting For Women (NROLFW). Check them out.

If you have never used free weights then I would not recommend fewer reps and lifting heavy. Not until you work on your form/technique and get used to the lifts. Start with 8-12 reps and a weight that you can handle without having your form break down. As you get more experienced then you can try programs that use lower reps and heavier weight.0
