Kids 3K. How do I start running with my son?

My 5 year old thinks he is interested in running a 3K (with 1.5K option) with his school at the end of April. We've never done any formal running with him and I wouldn't say he has particularly good endurance. He is however a fit healthy kid. I don't mind running with him although the 3K is also a bit over my usual running distance (I've worked up to 1.25 miles so far). Where do I start training with him? The course for the race is a flat one mile out with a U-turn onto another road to come back. There is a cut off in the middle for the youngest kids to do 1 mile instead of two. I mapped out a flat 1 mile loop in our neighborhood today. Should I just take him out this weekend and see how far he can go??

    A 3k is 1.86 miles, I think.

He probably doesn't need to train - 5 year olds have unlimited energy.

I think it is a great idea for you two to do this together though - so map out a course of 1.86 miles and go do it - even if you have to walk some of it. It will be great fun I think and really good for both of you.

You have time to do it again and again - even if you start out with a lot of walking for him or for you, you will be impressed with how much better you are in just two months.

I am doing the c25k with my kids (9 and 10) and they love it. You could do something similar but adjust the distance so he isn't running so far.
