Hi, all.
I've been using mfp for a few months now, and finally decided that perhaps I should introduce myself. I have been trying to lose fat while retaining muscle mass and maybe increase my strength. I used to play rugby while I was in college and now I am looking at trying some mixed martial arts. (I like hitting things). I'd love to be buddies with anyone who has similar interests and more of an interest in being healthy, not just losing weight.

Welcome to the forums!
Mixed martial arts will help you with retaining muscle as long as you push yourself, and be a great way to help with fat loss. Intensity is the key and your instructor can help with helping you with this. What martial arts are you looking at?
I studied Aikido, Chito-Ryu Karate-do, Shorinji Kempo, Kendo and Iaido - the commonalities between the multiple disciplines are physical fitness and self discipline. So I'm going back to my training roots since I no longer have the time in my schedule to continue with formalized instruction. If you can get to classes I do highly recommend that route, especially if you have a solid instructor.
I wish you continued success. And if you need some support and motivation, please feel free to add me.0 -
Thanks for the welcome! I studied Kendo for about a semester in college. I should have kept with it. Now I'm looking at krav maga, muy thai, and some MMA specifically focusing on grappling. I go a gym regularly now, but a sport always holds my interest longer than lifting barbells. I'm hoping structured classes will help me even more than regular gym workouts.0

I've heard that Krav Maga is intensely fun, and I do enjoy watching Muy Thai and MMA. Grappling will really help with overall conditioning. Wise decisions and I look forward to hear how much you'll enjoy.
Thanks for the add!0
