Kickbike

I recently found out about such things as kickbikes - works like a push scooter but with much larger wheels and with front brakes, can go on roads or pavements. I am really tempted to look into buying one as they look like the most awesome things ever - more portable and less maintenance than a bike; just as much fun as scooting. I can see how it would be awesome for commuting and for recreation. Has anyone got one? How far do you go on it, do you use it often, where do you go on it, do you get any funny looks (not that this would bother me too much!) What do you like about it and are there downsides?

I don't have a kickbike, I have.a scooter. Or rather, I use my daughter's when she's at school. Check out my sweet ride: http://www.johnlewis.com/231096312/Product.aspx

I like it for riding around where I live. It's not quite as fast as a bike, but it's faster than most runners, so good for quick trips to the store and back. It lives by the back gate, so is accessible to use, unlike my bike which lives in the garage. As a kickbike is bigger, you might want to think about where you'll keep it and if that will interfere with how much you'll use it.

I do get looks, but mostly positive comments or smiles. And as you don't have a problem dressing up like a cow, I don't think a few stares as you zoom past will slow you down much!
  • Thanks for the advice! Your one looks great. I bought a scooter in the weekend, but they didn't have one in store - I'm picking it up on Thursday. Here's my one: http://www.actionwheels.co.nz/zoom-scooters/roadmaster.html

It might be all I need really for everyday stuff, but I thought for longer distances a kickbike would be good too.

It looks good! You're probably right it'll be enough for everyday stuff, but it's also true they aren't great for anything cross-country.

    Love this!
I've never seen a scooter that would hold my weight, but I play around on a ripstick (flexible skateboard) sometimes, in addition to my biking and running. It would be great to have a scooter to throw in the mix.

Jimmie, the scooter in my link takes 100kg or 220 pounds. If this isn't enough, I'm sure there must be another that does, or perhaps the kickbikes do?

228 at my last weigh-in. And I tend to be rough on equipment.
Maybe I'll pick one up this spring or look at the kick-bikes.

EDIT - just looked up kickbike's website. I'd have to find one used; I can't justify that kind of money for a new toy.
  • Ripsticks! So that's what those things are called - I always wondered. That looks like great fun too! There's a whole range of most excellent wheeled vehicles out there. I want to win Lotto so I can buy one of each of them, and buy Jimmie a kickbike too! :-)

    Hi everyone,

I have recently bought a Yedoo Mezeq Disc,

    http://www.go2scooter.com/yedoo-mezeq/13-push-scooter-yedoo-mezeq-disc-black-white-8595142607511.html

It's awesome!!! I highly recommend it as a form of exercise. I have now started using the Myfitnesspal app and also Mapmyride for when I am out scooting. After 7 miles or so cross country on my Mezeq disc my whole body aches, legs and lungs burn and my love handles feel like I've been vigourously beaten lol, so I know it's giving me a great workout.

I am currently looking for a club or a like minded group of people in the Oxford area to go off on long scooter rides through the country for a bit of company on long rides. My pet husky also loves to be hooked up to the front and pull me along for a little while then just runs alongside me for the remainder of the journey. So in short, scootin is so much more fun than plain old cycling and jogging, I've had no joint pain or aches while using it either which is a plus for someone who is overweight and unfit as it means I don't have the excuse of injury to stop me going out and managing my goals, so onward and upward! Lol.

The only problem I have found is that I can't for the life of me find an exercise to enter into MyFitnessPal iPhone app which covers scootin..... I have been told its equivelant to moderate-vigorous cross country skiing?.. I haven't a clue myself so would love for someone to give me some info on this. Any help is greatfully received.

Glad you are having so much fun with it! I put in skateboarding, but you could create your own custom entry if you prefer.

Thanks for your reply, I'm loving my scooter. I may have to try to make my own entry I think.

The kickbike is great. Surely for people like me, who have a problem running. I can't run because of a problem with my shin's, so gained a lot of kilo's. Cycling is great, but cost a lot of time to burn calories.

Now I using a kikebike and use almost as much as running. without the strain of 3 time's my own weight on my knees and feet.
Mind you.. Still need good shoes if you are going to get serious.

To bad no (and do mean not a single one) sports-tracker supports the kickbike. So for the same caloriecount I use back-country-skiing.
