Lost 3.5lbs this week just by cutting out preprocessed foods

I can't believe it! I lost 3.5 lbs in 7 days just by cutting out pre-processed foods and only eating whole foods. I was a real skeptic about this before. I thought: how can I survive without my chocolate chip balance bars? But it worked! And I feel fabulous! I thought I was doing good before, but I have even more energy this week. Has anyone had this kind of success with "clean eating" after moderate (e.g. 2lbs/week) success using other methods?

Wow, that's amazing! What exactly is clean eating? Is it natural foods only like fruit and veggies? Can you direct where to find more info on this?0

For me, I cut out all grains (because grains have to be very processed to be digestible), processed foods, sugar, sodium, carbonated anything...........
Started making my own mayonnaise, salad dressings, eat lots of veggies, fruit is viewed as a dessert to be enjoyed just a couple of times a week.............0 -
I lost 6 pounds my first week of eating clean....and feel a million times better! I've now been eating (mostly) clean for 2 months, and have lost 27 pounds! It's so much better for your body, and really helps with weight loss.0

I give details on what I did on my blog, including menus, pictures, and recipes, as well as links to other resources in the daily logs: http://n8urm0m.wordpress.com/2010/05/17/owlfsh-challenge-conclusion/0 -

I did use store-bought English Muffins and Tortillas, but they were sprouted grain (Ezekial 9:4) due to the advice of Sally Fallon in "Nourishing Traditions." She contends that eating grains that haven't been sprouted cause lack of absorption of important vitamins and minerals due to their inherent indigestabilty. Since then, however, I have found some evidence to the contrary (http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2010/05/13/an-exploration-of-soaking-grains-more-fallonobrien-debate/) and am not sure what I think about it.
The rest of my meals used homemade bread (like my pizza) and I didn't notice any difference of bloating/indigestion associated with the homemade bread vs. sprouted grain. I do, however, notice that I feel a lot better than previously when I relied on store-bought regular whole wheat bread, English muffins, tortillas and crackers. In fact, the morning after the evening that I messed up and splurged/binged on Tostitos I noticed a HUGE difference; quite frankly I felt like crap - headache, belly pains and even sniffles. Today, though, I feel FANTASTIC!0 -

That is awesome! I am glad that someone else had similar (better!) results!0 -
I've managed to "clean eat" my way to gaining 15 extra pounds and now I am eating clean and losing those extra pounds. I totally agree that whole, unprocessed foods are the way to go, but it hasn't been a complete miracle vaccine for weight loss/maintenance for me. I mean, do you know how many calorie-rific bowls of steel-cut oats made with delicious whole organic milk or avocados I could put away? Enough to gain 15 lbs!
That said, my skin has never been better, I am never bloated and I have significantly fewer headaches! A lot of your weight loss might be due to cutting back on sodium. I rarely go over my sodium when I eat really cleanly. Yesterday I ate nearly 2000 calories and was still way under on sodium! Choose the right, low-calorie density clean foods (lots of veggies!) and it can definitely help you feel fuller, eat less and retain less water, but calories also do play a role.
Way to go to the OP! I'm glad you are seeing some positive "side effects" of cutting out processed foods!0 -

I checked my little graph for my sodium intake and you are right! I cut my sodium almost in half this past week. WOW!!!0 -
Thanks for sharing Natural Mom and congrats on the great results.
I did something similar last week. For 3 days I cut out all sugar, all refined carbs and upped my protein intake %.
Felt amazing and I dropped about 2 lbs for the week (I had been up by 2 lbs after a high calorie weekend so that's really more like 4 lbs in 3 days which is amazing)
I would love to cut out all processed food but I can't quite get there as I still eat store bought Yogurt, pasteurized milk and bread. Sometimes I can get my hands on Raw milk which I really enjoy.
Are you going to keep it up?0 -
Wow, that's amazing! I'd love to try this, it seems hard regarding dropping off the bars (love them!) and multi grain bread, but I'm going to give it a whirl just so I can feel the difference of really eating clean.
Thanks for sharing.0 -
This week I am trying the Raw Cleanse to continue my "clean" eating journey. The pill supplements and even morning "mouthwash" aren't too bad, but the evening sludge is disgusting. I thought I could eat anything, but this is beyond nauseating. I am not trying to be crude, but descriptive: it tastes like vomit smells. I am going to have to use another supplement to replace this one. I am thinking of using Detoxifiber from Garden of Life since it is the same parent company and therefore hopefully also friendly with my "raw" diet. Would be interested to know if anyone else has tried this before...0

I haven't tried any kind of cleanse. I can't say that I really see a reason to -- especially one that makes me want to gag! What is the benefit supposed to be?0 -
I have done the same. I used to eat the Safeway Eating Right and Smart Ones frozen dinners all the time, but now I make (most) everything myself. I am currently going gluten free (in support of my boyfriend...ugh it is difficult) so that cut out alot of the processed things like bread and crackers. The biggest thing I have noticed is that I eat MORE. Instead of having one premade frozen meal I have protein and veggies and fruits and rice, all for about the same amount of calories.
I am impressed with your story and great job!! I still do ocassionally have processed foods (I felt it wasteful to throw away anything so I just incorporate some cereals and stuff in here and there).0 -
My husband was diagnosed with fibro and is now on a vegan diet; no dairy, no processed foods, no meat and lots of veggies! His pain has gone down considerably and has lost about 25 pounds.0

This is meant to be a response to orignal poster... natural Mom .
OK - first I will say - I do not mean to offend by any questions or comments that may follow. My delivery has been know to get others pssed at me! Ok - first - YEAH - you are fortunate to be a stay at home MoM!!. It would be nice to make home made foods , cut out proceesed foods and have the time for your regimented clean eating journey. I have to wonder thou - do you plan to not eat bread ,other "real " foods and eat Pills for he rest of your life. You have discovered an amazing weight loss program for you - but what about the "real world". MFP haelps to teach many to eat healthy , make wiser choices and eat real food . I commend you for your new found happiness , although I am hesitant to go over the top ( as others have) due to many supplements and cutting out foods.
Good luck to you!0
