Working out with knee problems

I have had knee surgery on my left knee and I am going to need another (and possibly a replacement) before too long. I can walk, I don't feel comfortable running on a treadmill or the street. My range of motion is limited, not by much but I have a hard time straightening out my leg. I know that some of these problems will go away with weight loss but I just have to face the fact that this is something that I have to deal with.
Does anyone have any tips for what type of exercises I can do that won't leave my knee swollen and not weight bearing? I've been biking and I go for speed walks/jogs. Any help would be great!

I am having the same problem. I am trying to get into the C25K that everyone raves about, but my knees are just not having it. It helps to ice them whenever they get sore. I always thought that was a bunch of hooey, but lately it seems to work. Getting a good pair of shoes has also helped a lot. I am able to jog just a teensy little bit longer each time.
There are seated exercise videos out there for people who are just starting out or have medical complications. Maybe try one of those for a while, then get back on your feet once you have lost a little more weight and feel safer about it.0 -
Swimming, deep water aerobics, biking, walking....there's no reason anyone has to run, and I think running is especially hard on one's body when you're more than a few pounds overweight.0

Ahh I feel your pain - knee problems suck. As the other posters have said though, there's still lots of exercises you can do. Swimming and water aerobics are good ones, but if you can walk, walk. You'd be surprised how many calories you burn burn walking really fast - it's how I keep fit. Good luck!0

Great post, I have wondered the same.
I have the same problem, have severe arthritis in my right knee! The knee specialist, said oh yes you really need a knee replacement, but you are not getting one, lose some weight and the pain will decrease. Here are some painkillers for the gym!
Just bought a elliptical trainer, but my does it kill my knee0
