Exercises that trim mere mortals can be career-maiming for catwalkers. Push-ups are out — developing the chest is bad news — as are squats and lunges, which make the derrière too round to fit into the clothes. (Lingerie models are allowed lunges because they are allowed curves, he said.) Ab exercises also are rationed. “When they really burn the fat you’ll see a six-pack, which is not usually the goal,” Mr. Olajide said. “You want flat, but if you’re too cut, defined and hard, that can be counterproductive. We want long, willowy, wispy, flowing.”

I bet they barely get to eat too. I'll stick to lifting and eating like a boss thanks.0

How are big name fashion designers rich? They make clothes that 99% of the population can't afford and 99% can't wear. The overlapping percentage of "can afford" and "can wear" must be minuscule.0

Wow... yoga makes you bulky? Who knew?
Also LOL@ 'Fighting Fit' most of them would have trouble fighting their way out of a wet paper bag!0 -

My aunt was a model. The stuff they show on the runway isn't what they sell in stores, it's supposed to be the spirit of the clothing line or whatever. I think it's just an excuse to make grown women dress f***ing weird.
I think the standard diet is cigs and an apple. Same thing Bale used to get into form for the Machinist.0 -

Yup, that's what I thought it was too.
Seriously..I feel sad that the ideal for models in fashion, is just basically thin with no real shape or definition. I'll stick to my squats, and other exercises that will get me some awesome muscles!0 -
I work with a lot of models and just like ballerinas its a physically demanding job requiring discipline and resolve. I know that a lot of people on MFP believe that "cut" is the only sexy but "long, willowy, wispy and flowing" sounds/ looks better to me. This article is proof that modelling isn't all about starvation...0

I think that the idea that ballerina's are "willowy and wispy" is pure nonsense. I have some beautiful friends at the top of their game in the dance world and I think that the population that sees muscle definition as "bulky" would call these girls "bulky". Ballerina's bust their butts and are extremely muscular (which I think looks beautiful), very different from what runway models look like or even strive to look like. Comparing the two is ridiculous, in my opinion.
As an example, this is a dear friend of mine from one of her magazine photos. I am only showing her legs, because the rest of the pic could get me a strike only because of the way the top part of the leotard is (its a bit thin, if you get me), but this is my favorite picture of her because it shows how strong and powerful these dancers are:

Personally I think it depends what you're modeling. Fashion models are required to be very thin, however they have changed the minimum BMI to be at least a bit idealistic. I am sure now that they have made it a rule for the most part that BMI's cannot be below 16... Which mind you is very low, and still dangerously close to stopping many women's natural cycles, but it's better than the ulterior.0
