MFP bmr = more then it recommends for me @ -1lbs per week...

Options
Greetings All -

I am a 44 yo guy - currently 215lbs and 6' and a half inch.
mfp BMR calculator says 1,911 a day

if I set the weight loss goal to recommended @ 1lbs per week it wants me to eat 1,880.
but my understanding is that it is important not to eat under your BMR

sooo can someone enlighten me please
many thanks!

The less you have to lose the less grand your deficit should be.

And considering you are a man with 35 pounds to lose, I wouldn't stress out.

Keep in mind that BMR calculation by MFP doesn't take into account body fat %.

Try the katch mcardle calculation, and go from there-

It is not important to eat above your BMR; in fact, the only purpose for BMR is to calculate your TDEE. What IS important is to not have too great of a caloric deficit. For some people, eating below their BMR and having too great of a deficit are one in the same thing, but that's because they're active; given the numbers you provided, you're sedentary, so it's not a problem. Find out your Katch-McArdle BMR with the calculator that was linked above, find your TDEE, then subtract 20% and that is how much you should eat.

I would recommend you to follow the advices in here:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/654536-in-place-of-a-road-map-2-0-revised-7-2-1

I have manually set my goals in MFP and finally loosing weight w/o starving. If you are going to eat below your BMR you will be very hungry, and for a reason!

You can net below your BMR and still have a satisfying gross caloric intake if you exercise.

So I am pretty active - I teach dance and do yoga 5x a week
but I also sit at a desk....

so it seemed easier to say sedentary and then just log all activity....
I couldn't figure out which one to pick if I looked at the ones indicating more activity the sedentary
and I read a post where some one suggested this as a good methodology....

    thoughts?

thanks so much for all of the responses in figuring this stuff out
the alchemy of fitness is far less then clear and this community is remarkably helpful!
    best to all!

My point was that hunger has nothing to do with BMR as you seem to imply.

Yeah, that's a good way of doing things. I do that too.
