When should you stay out of the gym?

I never know when you're supposed to take a rest day because of how you feel or when you're just supposed to power through...

This is actually a problem for me because I suffer from Lyme Disease (and therefore chronic pain...). So, on my bad days am I supposed to power through and get that workout in? Or is there a time when you're supposed to say, "Ok, today is not the day for the gym."

And on an even more basic level...what if you're just normal sick? When do you keep on your workout schedule and when do take a rest day?

I spent the weekend in Disney this weekend, so I walked about 15 miles a day on both Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately, my body is still recuperating and is screaming at me NOT to go work out today...But, I spent all day in the car yesterday so I feel like that should be my rest day...

Help??

If you are sick with a cold or flu stay home. By you using the equipment or breathing on other people you are going to get them sick. We have that rule at work. That is what sick time is for. I am a little sensitive to this because I just got a cold for the first time in over five years. I am certain its from somebody in the gym.

I don't consider a day in the car a rest day. Travel can be extremely stressful and leaves me feeling sore and exhausted. Take a day off. Maybe just go for a nice walk.

Have you discussed this with a doctor?

I personally try to work out 4 to 5 times a week. I also try never to do the same thing two days in a row. Over the summer, I was in a good routine of run a day, bike a day, walk a day, rest. Some weeks I got 6 days of workouts in, but if I cut one, it would be the walking most of the time. I have just now (after a year of running) gotten to the point where I can run 2 days in a row.

For you, given your medical condition, I would rest at least every 3rd day, but maybe even every other day, depending on how you feel. On your 'rest' days you could certainly do something light like walking - just don't over do it. And by all means, regardless of when you last worked out, if your body is telling you to rest, then rest!

I work out when I have a cold, but I don't go to a gym.

Does stress burn calories? If so, I'm TOTALLY not working out today cause I was completely stressed out all day yesterday! lol

I have discussed it with my doctor...he doesn't want me doing any more than walking for short periods of time...I got really fat with that advice. lol Now, we have a compromise that I'll be safe but not lazy.

I can't comment on the Lyme Disease question, because I don't know enough about it.

But when just normal sick, I will still work out if I don't have a fever, but I don't go to the gym. Why spread my germs to someone else? I work out at home those days.

Whether I am sick or not, I clean the equipment at the gym before and after I use it, just in case.
