About to give up. Will I be this size forever? :-(

I am almost convienced that I will stay this size forever. I have not lost any weight in the past year nor do my clothes fit any different. I have tried mixing up my workouts, upping my calories, reducing my calories. Nothing seems to make a difference.

No fast food, lean meats, dairy, nuts, beans, whole grains, veggies and fruits, very little processed food. One "cheat" meal per week (within reason). I workout 5 days a week including strength training 3 times a week. Today for example I did 30 minutes on the elleptical on level 5, then a walk/jog on the treadmill for 10 minutes burning a total of 300 calories per my HRM. .

I have opened my diary, but I have been so discouraged that I haven't logged much lately. Thanks for any advice you have!

remove dairy for two weeks and see what happens.

If you're doing weights, you might be gaining weight but losing fat. Measure your body instead of weighing yourself.

I have been doing measurements. Also I'm wearing the same clothing I've been wearing for the last year. They do not fit any different.

In your profile it says something about hypothyroidism. Have you talked to your doctor about that in conjunction with the weight loss?

I don't have any advice for you, but I just wanted to congratulate you on 65 pounds lost! That's a wonderful accomplishment. I hope you can figure this out and meet the rest of your goal.

Dairy could help, or gluten. I don't know exactly how food intolerance works, but my partner can't eat gluten and once we discovered that she lost 10 pounds in what seemed like a couple of days. One beer and she will bloat up visibly.

Do you try to eat low-fat as many dieters do? I personally think this is a huge mistake, though others certainly have different views. I am seeing weight loss on higher fat and protein with more calories and fewer carbs. It may have to do with insulin, since I am a type I diabetic, but I know other friends of mine have added more fat and started to see the scale move.
    Eggs included in that?

Unfortunately, I have been to a couple different doctors over the last year complaining about my lack of weightloss only to be told my levels are normal. :-(

Sugar tracking seemed to help for many people on here.

Also - limit your grain intake. The grains we eat today have been modified - Which is why when I have pasta, it has to be from italy where they are not modified apparently.

Use a tiny amount of iodized salt as well - which may help with your hypothyroidism. Don't give up, just keep testing new things for a few weeks at a time. It's like a puzzle you just need to crack! ;)

No, I do not buy low fat. I do get light dressing only because I think it tastes better. I use real butter and coconut oil. I just recently changed the fat/carb/protein ratios to see if that makes a difference.

LOG LOG LOG ..... its impossible to accurately diagnose a problem from your diary if you dont use it.

Also 1500 may be too low particularly if you are exercising as much as you say. Try eating more.

Also I found that weight loss stalled when my body got used to routine ..... change up your exercise ....eat some spike days.

I was at one point tracking sugar then I realized most of what I get is natural so I took it off.

So whole wheat bread, no good? Yikes! Just when you think you are doing good...

I haven't tried the salt, I've been using sea salt and just a sprinkle here and there. Not much.

Which type of doctor are you seeing for you thyroid? Just a general practitioner or an endo? They actually have different range that they consider being high or low. My gp said my thyroid was just fine. My endo put me on synthroid, and the scale started going down. My gp wanted to argue with the endo's diagnosis at first, but once he started seeing all my symptoms clearing up, he shut up. I still had to fight with him last year when I said my prescription needed to be adjusted.

Natural sugar is still sugar. You should absolutely track it if you've been stuck this long.

As previously stated, I have increased my calories, reduced them, changed my routine and even did the zig zag calorie thing over the last year. Durning November and December I went back to maintainence trying to let my system reset. Then began again first of the year. Havent lost a thing yet. I do eat my exercise calories back. 1500 is only if I don't exercise.

I have seen both types. I actually have an appointment next week with the GP and the endo next month.

id suggest bumping up the resistance on the elliptical to at least a 10. You should be full on sweating at 12 mins in. This is the test for me when its time to bump up the resistance. If you arent sweating at 12 mins, you arent using enough resistance. Also- very important- to hold onto those arm bars when doing the elliptical.

Also keep logging and frankly i think its important to track all sugars, including fruit.
  • I find that when I slack off with logging, I am eating more calories than I realize. I got myself a kitchen scale and I realized I was eating bigger portions than I realized.

Start with two weeks of serious logging and weighing and measuring your food. See if that makes a difference. No slacking off!

I do want to wish you a big congrats on your 65 pound weight loss. That is a huge accomplishment!

Well, you have not really logged consistently since June, have you? My advice is to log EVERYTHING EVERY DAY. You obviously know what you are doing b/c you have lost weight before, but how do you know how much your are eating if you are not logging? Do that, then print a full report and show it to your endo next time you have your TSH check. Ask to adjust your levo dose so that your TSH is around 0.15. Maybe ask to test your vit D levels too. That's what my endo did and found low levels of vit D.

what about doing the Military diet for 3 days? I was stalled and did the diet, dropping 5#. Since then I've dropped a pound or 2 a week--in any event, don't give up! the loss you've had is amazing, and sticking with it will be worth it!!!

I had the same problem. So I gave up, stopped exercising dieting, trying all together from Sept til Dec. I gained 5 lbs back and picked back up at the end of Jan and been dropping about 3 lbs per week since then. Maybe give your body a break.

Iodine supplements made with sea kelp or Potassium Iodide might be a good option for you if the doctor is saying that your levels are normal. I'm in the "high normal" range and seem to get a boost in my metabolism when I use Potassium Iodide drops.

    Thank you, I appreciate that!

I do measure, even if I don't log. I have been at this for 2 years now so it's kinda just habit. I eat the same foods in the same amounts from day to day. Kinda boring ha!

Zig-zagging and changing your intake for a month isn't necessarily going to make huge differences, at least none that you'll see in that short of a period of time.

Keep logging, calculate your BMR/TDEE, make sure you're eating enough, don't fall in for any of the "do the military/mcdonalds/hip-hop dancing diet" garbage.

A caloric deficit should work, but you have to be patient with it. Maintenance may have changed for you, too... as could your BMR. Take your measurements currently, adjust accordingly, log everything, and give it more than just a month to see results.
  • You should take a closer look at sugar - as others have said. You might enjoy this lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

Great work so far on the weight loss.
  • maybe up your workout everyday see if that helps but don't give up u have done so well so far :)

Could you afford to see a dietician?

My weight loss secret is heavy cardio - running, biking 9 miles, whatever.

Sorry you're going through this. I know the feeling myself. Plateaus are hard to deal with.

Are you doing anything differently now than when you were losing?
