Fasted Morning Workouts

What's your opinions and/or personal results with fasted morning workouts? I've read that your metabolism is slower throughout the day rather than if you ate and you're also slower and have less energy.

I had great results with it. In the peak of my weight loss (93 lbs in 10 months) I went every morning at 6am before I ate anything, then would end it with a protein shake and something else for breakfast. I've maintained since then (give or take 10 lbs) but started out working out later in the day and had a little more trouble losing weight. Maybe that's a coincidence, but I find it a little harder to workout later in the day after eating.
Now that I do the IF lifestyle (google intermittent fasting/Lean Gains lifestyle) I started doing my fasted morning workouts again I noticed a difference right away. I personally love it. It sets the mood for the whole day, gives me more energy and I find I get in a better workout than if I were to eat first also.
It's worth giving it a try for a couple months and see how it works for you.

Intermittent fasting can be done different ways, but the Lean Gains approach is to have an 8 hour eating window in the day, followed by 16 hour daily fast. For example, I could get up at 8am to go workout. Eat all of my calories between 10am-6pm and then not eat beyond the last meal of the day before bed. Then when you wake up, workout before you break the fast with a big post-workout meal.

I do all my workouts fasted. I practice Intermittent fasting and after the first week found great results with working out fasted. I tend to fast 16-20 hours/day (plus one 24 hour fast per week) so I workout anytime during that period. I've been losing about 12 lbs/month for the past three months so my results have been great.
Intermittent fasting is a lifestyle that can be practiced for weight loss, gain, or maintenance. The idea is that your body can either be in a fed or fasted state and that certain beneficial metabolic and hormonal changes occur only when the body is in the fasted state. It is extremely flexible and can be adapted to suit pretty much any lifestyle. If you are interested in the science behind it I highly recommend the book Eat, Stop, Eat by Brad Pilon.
There are some groups of people intermittent fasting is not recommended for including people with eating disorders (it can become a vehicle for their disorder) and some people cannot adapt to fasting.
I would usually go into more detail but I re-injured an ankle that I've already had a couple surgeries on and am feeling pretty loopy because of painkillers. If you have specific questions, I can probably answer them.

I have coffee with milk, then an aspirin, then orange juice, about a half hour apart. Not quite fasting, but almost. I do my workout and then eat. For me, I can't imagine trying to give my workout everything if I have a stomach full of food. I would probably go back to bed.:laugh:0

I get up and get moving, then my body temp comes back to normal while I eat breakfast and fix a salad for lunch, shower and off to work.
I get acidly if I eat right before I work out and I am not going to get up any earlier.0 -

I have to workout first thing in the AM before I give myself any amount of time to talk myself out of it. I do this 7 days a week. I don't care if some think it's extreme. It's what keeps me motivated. therefore, I do not eat before I work out. AND..I only eat when I'm hungry. Sometimes I'll have a smoothy after my workout with I'm hungry, other times I may wait up to several hours. I've found it's really dependet on the amount of water I consume during my cardio sessions. I also usually get 10 or so hours of sleep so I suppose that's kind of like fasting before a workout. ?0

it's an individual thing. some people work out better fasted some do better fed.
you should just try both out and see how you like them.
i think any differences in how either "revs" up your metabolism or whatever is minuscule. just do what works best for you.
i personally get better workouts when i'm fasted. i'm usually stronger and faster. if i workout less than 5-6 hours after a meal i feel sluggish and bloated0 -

Hmm for me it is definitely hit or miss. It is very related to what I had the night before.
1. If I had mostly produce and protein for dinner, fasted workouts are very hard. I don't have enough gas in the tank to go faster or longer, especially for intervals. I start to feel queasy.
2. If I had more starch with dinner, then my performance post "fast" is great.
But in actuality, the best time for me to workout is the time I actually can do it. I don't like to workout too soon after eating. I like a couple hours buffer between meals.0 -
