Weight/Fat Gain

Over the weekend I was pretty bad with my eating but I walked about and hour if not more a day.
I had a few questions regarding what actually happens when you gain fat.
I'm not talking about the water weight or bloated after one day.
Ive heard the" you can't gain fat after one bad day of splurg" unless you eat a huge amount of calories.
So I have gone with this and if I'm bloated the next day mostly from booze I don't sweat it.
But was wondering over say 3 days does this turn into fat? It takes more then one day of bad eating for the body to gain actual faT?
Just confused. Could someone explain?

Alcohol has a lot of calories, it depends on how much drunk. Drink more than you burn in a day and weight will rise. It still takes 3500 calories for 1 pound so that is like 17 glasses of wine. If you drunk say 200 calories over you burn (1 big glass of wine) each night, it would still take 17 days to put on 1 pound of fat
Water weight/ food weight will go back after a few days.0 -
thanks for the reply.. I'm not so much worried about myself just was wondering about this on the weekend.
But I probably average 2000cals each day and then minus all the walking.
Do you know how many days it takes to lose a pound with what calorie deficit?
If that makes sense.0 -
It would take 3,500 calories over your maintenance level of calories (not your MFP goal) to gain 1 lb of fat. You have natural body weight fluctuations...when I weighed in last Friday I came in at 186.5 lbs...when i weighed on Sunday I was 189...I assure you that I didn't gain 3.5 Lbs over the course of two days. My maintenance level of calories is roughly 2,550...that means I would have had to consume 17,350 calories in two days for that to be fat...I assure you I would be sick and puking before I could ever even come close to that amount in 2 days. It was water retention from a.) an intense workout Saturday morning and b.) a good party on Saturday night.
Alcohol will cause your body to retain a lot of water because it dehydrates...when you dehydrate, your body retains as much as much water as possible...after a good weekend of partying, I can easily be 5 lbs heavier on Monday than I am Friday...and then completely back to normal by Wed/Thurs and drop another Lb or so of fat by Friday (from the previous Friday).0 -
YOu need to consume 3500 more calories than you burn to gain a lb. You could in theory gain two pounds of fat in a day if you ate enough to do so.
Eating 2000 cals is most likely not above your maintance calories.. especially if you were walking and exercising. Don't worry about it.
There isn't a time frame that I know of when your body converts something to fat. It takes 3500 calories to gain a pound of fat... it takes the same amount of calories burned to lose a pound of fat. Your body will store it when your intake is more than your body needs.0 -
FYI
Looked up on the internet.. how many calories burned does it take to lose a pound.
Just been curious and want to make sure I stay on track this time.
But said to lose 5pounds.. need to burn 17,500calories.
(I'm big math nerd, so bare with me here)
17,500 calories burn in a month /3.5 (average weeks in a month)
/ 7 days in a week = roughly have to burn 714 calories a day.
That is really do-able.0 -

It is doable... if weight loss followed math. Unfortunately, burning more than enough calories to lose a pound doesn't mean you will. Don't get too caught up in the numbers.0 -

And keep in mind that's not how much you need to burn with exercise... but in a calorie deficit.
I hate to say that but it confuses some.0 -

And that's exactly why when you tell MFP your weight loss goal, there is already a deficit built into your daily eating goal.
So if you exercise and eat that back, that same deficit is still there.
Where are you at that you only get 3.5 weeks in a month BTW. Even for such a beastly month as February 28 days is plenty, that's 4 full weeks.0 -

Average weeks in a month = 4.3.
It's easier to think of a week (for me). To lose one pound in one week, you have to burn 500 calories per day. Or you could reduce your calories by 500 per day. OR you could do a combination - say burn 250 calories per day and reduce your calories by 250 per day.
That's math. It doesn't seem to work like that in real life.0 -

5000 rather then (4weeks) =4375.. gives a high estimate
I use 3.5 weeks also when calculating my wages because then I can't over estimate a number and budget for something that I might not have.0 -
3500 calories is a pound. Time is irrelevant. If you eat 500 over maintenance for 7 days you gain a pound. If you eat 500 less for 7 days you loose a pound. If you eat 100 over for 35 days you gain a pound etc.0
