So it seems the concensus here is that weight lifting isn't just for body building guys.... I have always kept way from the weights because I was a a competitive swimmer and I was always self conscious about my broad shoulders. I am ao afraid of having football shoulders.
So that said, I am ready to revisit this and try and change my feeling about it..
Need, how to start advice...and any other opinions on the subject!
Thanks!

There is a Starting Strength program I've heard good things about. I do New Rules of Lifting for Women and love it.
I would be super jealous of your swimmers shoulders!0 -

I started on the Body for Life lifting programme but did my own eating plan
It had good instrcutions and photos to follow. This book set me up to learn the basics of lifting and the benefits. It went for 12 weeks at the end I lost a lot of weight and dropped staggering inches.0 -

If you belong to a gym I would hire a personal trainer for an hour. They'll show you what you can do with the equipment they have. You can lift higher reps with lower weight and it won't bulk you up like lifting heavy will... not to mention you can target each muscle group separately with machines to get the look you want. (Another words, don't work the muscles hard that you don't want any bigger.)
That's all I have. Shoulders though I wouldn't worry about. I watched the Crosfit challenge about a month ago. The women doing powerlifts were awesome. They looked sexy and muscular and had big shoulders. They weren't overly pumped-manly looking and the shoulders just fit the rest of their body.0
