Golf fitness group?

Ok - so I joined here just trying to get into shape. According to my Dr. I'm there (although I've got a bit of gut I'd like to lose still). I am now looking to work on some toning and strength building - but I am focused on golfing in the summer. I walk 9 holes every week and try to get out more when I can. I was looking for groups to share their experiences and fitness plans working towards becoming a better golfer - but don't see any. Anybody else on here a golfer and interested in a group?
Oh - and pretty much just getting healthier and losing the weight throughout the summer last year I lowered my 9 hole score by 2 strokes off the year before. Sure, some of it was just not having to swing around the gut - but conditioning helps

I am not a golfer (at all) but my fiance is an avid one so I can weigh in!
The answer sort of depends on how serious you are. There is a program called the TPI (Titleist Perfromance Institute) that is a number of locations all over the county. You go in, they test your strenghth, your swing, etc and then design a custom 3 day a week workout for you to improve your weak areas. They also give you a printout on your strenghts and weakenesses, test your metnal game, etc. If you are a serious golfer and have a 5 handicap or better it would be woth considering. It is expesnive.
If you want to tackle it yourself, many PGA golfer's publish their workouts in golf magazines or you can find them online.
Bascially- this is what the aim to do: Increase balance, increase strength, increase endurance. Many moves have elemts of all 3. Lots of plyometrics, strength training, balance drills, and endurance work. Lots of strength moves focus on balacing on one leg, like bulgarian split squats or pistol squats. Also, lots of drills use a medicine ball to add instability for chest presses, etc.
Hope that helps!0 -
I'm here! I'm a golfer and I think the first round is going to be this weekend. WOOHOO.
I'm not a "serious" golfer other than I'm serious about it when I play and would like to seriously not suck. But, my best game is in the low 120s so far (3-4 years).
I would suggest Golf magazine. They usually a have a few exercises designed to treat a problem area. That along with basic cardio and strength training will take you far.0 -

Bahaha! This! I went out yesterday by myself and walked nine. I got totally schooled and humiliated by an older gentleman who came out to help me after watching me play horribly through one hole. Luckily, I had on my big girl panties and was able to put aside my pride and learn something. I want to be able to crush the ball. Right now, though I feel strong, I can only drive it 175 at best.0
