The things people say ...

My friend just adamantly told me that cardio is not good for weight loss. And pretty much told me that insanity will be a waste of time. I don't even know what to say to her regarding this ... She's strictly paleo and thinks that is the only way to go for weight loss. What do you say to these fanatics who are convinced that you should follow their theories?

Another friend keeps telling me about how she's not losing weight despite eating only one meal a day (which includes a pint of ice cream). Despite my efforts to tell her it's about calories in vs calories out, she doesn't listen to me either.

Just say you're trying to find what works for you. Everyone has something that works for them better than other things. And like the post before.. Just go on!

I just don't talk about weight loss with most people. I have a few close friends and family members who are great to chat with, but for the most part I won't bring it up. If someone tries to give me advice that I know is ridiculous, I just say "That's nice" and change the subject. If they are really insistent, I tell them that I've made decisions that are best for my life and I won't be changing my plan.

 I've got to remember this. My BF's mother and sister are constantly on about their diet pill/patch/etc. They talk and I usually lose interest. This will at least be an entertaining way to respond!

Yes, don't argue or try to convince. Just do what you are doing and let them do what they are doing. When the friend with the ice cream tells you she isn't losing weight, tell her you're sorry to hear that.

I just let it roll off ...everyone has an opinion on what works/what doesn't work .... and different things work for different people. Just like her diet wouldn't work for me..I like a daily treat of some sort, I like that I'm learning how to manage that. So either just nod with a smile or change the subject..don't let it get in the way of a friendship.

    I am "the food police"!
  • I would just agree to disagree with that person. Its like religion, when someone tries convincing people that their way is the only way. If someone is wasting energy trying to convince you of doing things a certain way that you dont agree with, you should disregard them... or on the other hand you could try it.
  • I try to stick with well respected scientific studies tempered with common sense, and my own experiences.

I put little value in brosciense, sketchily certified trainers, and anecdotal evidence

I don't really talk about it with anyone and honestly I don't think I would get much push back. There is one person I USED to be friends with back in high school who was the most gullible person ever and thought eating a banana a day was a brilliant diet plan and she had to share all of her "wisdom" with others. This meant she would chastise us for things like eating after 8pm or something. We are no longer friends. I don't miss her.

It's terrible, because ever since this person got fanatical about paleo, she somehow lost the ability to talk about anything else! I need to pull off that look in the second GIF from Silver Star.

    refer her to Scientology.
  • Cardio has so many benefits *other* than weight loss, it's simply a mandatory activity if you want to be fit and healthy. However, in terms of weight loss, cardio can support fat loss, but is not really effective on its own.

In general, an average person doing a cardio activity like running, elliptical or biking burns an average of 600-700 calories an hour, or about 10-12 calories a minute. If you are enormously dedicated, and do your cardio an hour a day every day you can expect to burn just about a pound a week. Not only must you be dedicated to achieve this, but you must also ensure that your effort also doesn't stimulate your appetite to the point where you give in and eat the calories you just burned away!

Calorie restriction, on the other hand, can be much more effective for weight loss, especially in people who find that strenuous exercise stimulates their hunger. The restriction should be moderate, about 10-20% less than TDEE.

This isn't a license to skip cardio, though!

I don't talk weight loss or fitness with people outside of MFP except a few and that's because they have the same mentality I do.

My sister LOVED Insanity and plans on doing it again (she's pregnant right now)
I don't love it like her. I like it, it's a great workout program but not one I could follow for that long ya'know?
Jillian Michaels workouts are working great for me though and I switch up dvds a lot.
We have discussed that to really enjoy what you're doing you have to find what works for YOU fitness wise or you won't stick to it

Ok, suuuuuuurrrrrrre. I had a friend who said once she could only lose weight by eating organic foods. She did not count calories, or anything, was CONVINCED it was the only way to go. That lasted about a month. Then it was no corn, then it was only cabbage etc. *sigh* I would ignore your friend and do weight loss the healthy and balanced way.

I heard a trainer tell someone they can't lose weight without exercising core muscles. I bit my tongue and kept doing my crunches because hey, it might not be true, but exercise is still good for you.

Just say "You know, I think you're right. I'll start next month." Then, next month, find a reason why you shouldn't start until the month after.

I haven't really told anyone I am on a 'diet' not that that is quite the right word. My mum and dad noticed, but I think dad was the only one who listened to the fact I am trying to eat more. I know people at work are starting to notice and my husband loves seeing me enjoy my food and the changes to my mood. He also says I look better an can cleary see I enjoy doing weights lol. He doesn't care as long as I am happy.

I will talk to people about food if they want, I like food and food conversations. But I won't tell people what to eat, maybe suggest stuff to try- eg this is really yummy, or have you even eaten. I had a conversation about nuts and seeds last night. But unless asked I won't or don't want to give/recieve diet advice.

I have a friend just like this. Any time I say I am doing something, for example, walking for cardio, weighlifting, jogging. "Its not enough dude, walking is bad. Losing 10 pounds a month is so bad and slow, you should be losing more" Its really the most horrible most annoying thing in the world. The sad part? He is a 350 pound guy also, I weigh about 265 atm. He always tries to put me down in any way possible to make himself look better. He does it in front of everyone also. Also when I first started dieting I would get a Mighty Kids Meal at Mcdonalds, instead of 2 mcdoubles, medium fries and dr pepper. When I started getting the mighty kids meal. "Why don't you just get 4 mcnuggets and no french fries?" Like seriously dude SHUT THE F***** UP It makes me soooooooooooooooooo madddddddd, like piisiiiiiisseeed. The other day I didn't go to gym "Oh, your gonna be just like me, I didn't go one day and never ever went again. I know your feelings and holy its the hardest not to say anything. I'm afraid one day I will explode.
