The hotter the better?

I see people all of the time jogging and such with hoodies and multiple layers of clothes on? Does this REALLY help you lose weight faster? I know that you sweat more... but is the amount you sweat actually related to the amount of fat/calories you burn?

Basically, I just want to know the reason behind wearing all of the layers while working out?

    Maybe they're cold!

    Definitely helps lose water weight.

It happens just as much in 90 degree weather as 40 degree weather. lol. Maybe its the water weight thing??

I do it out of habit although I actively tried last year to wear less as I would get so hot! I am photosensitive so I get rashes that can scale and bleed from too much sun exposure. But with slow increases in exposure it doesn't happen so it's an ongoing thing.

It is just water weight. As someone else said, many people do it to "make weight" for something, military, job requirements, a fight, etc. I don't think it affects calories burned, and even if it does, it's likely by a very miniscule amount. You're likely to see a drop on the scale, but it'll come right back with a few glsases of water.

There are some good reasons for wearing all that while running but burning extra calories isn't one of them. Two good reasons are to not be cold or to speed up heat acclimization before the hot weather hits.

That seems to be used by two very different types: competitive athletes who are trying to make weight, and idiots who don't know that they're just losing water weight.
  • Okay I understand now! I'm glad I asked. If it really sped up the burning process... I totally would have done it. lol
  • thanks everyone!

One thing I've read is that it takes more energy for the body to cool itself down hence the reason for classes like Hot Yoga. I googled asking if you burn more calories exercising outside in the winter because of the cold but it doesn't because your body warms up when you are active but it went on to say what I just mentioned.

So it just tires you out?

People mistakenly think it aids in weight loss. It's one of those zombie myths that refuses to die.

I run half-naked even when it's 40 (below that, I put layers on). And I am always surprised when I see other runners wearing such heavy clothes.
