ladies who lift...

What is the best way to get started with a strength training program??? I just started running (c25k) and am almost done with 30 Day Shred... I am reading The New Rules of Lifting for Women. Is it best to start with the recommendations/workouts in the book? Get a trainer? A different program??? I am kind of at a loss right now. I want to start, but I am not exactly sure where to begin. Is it ok to continue my c25k program too??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi,
If you can find an experienced trainer who is good at working with women, it's worth it. I finally found a good one and it helps to learn the proper form if someone can correct it . A few reps done right is better than 20 done the wrong way, and you will get results fast. Good luck to you, you will enjoy it.
I had done weight training on my own, using DVDs and watching in mirror , etc. to try to get proper form, but it's good to have feedback on what you are doing. Watching yourself in the mirror is not always possible or it may affect how you hold your body.

Check out Jamie Eason's LiveFit program. I'm in phase 2 and am really liking it. I actually do it at home, so I have to switch out some of the things that require a machine. If you have weights and a barbell it's definately doable

I downloaded Starting Strength and am following the program (slowly but surely) and watch a lot of videos etc to make sure I get my form straight.

Any beginner program like Starting Strength, NROLFW or Stronglifts 5x5 would be fine as long as you do it safely and consistently. Maybe find a trainer or someone more advanced to help you with form until you're comfortable. I'm comfortable with being self-taught so I don't have a problem lifting by myself. Depends on how you learn and what you're comfortable with, really.
