Running my first 5k in May!

Hello fellow MFP goers! I am almost 50 lbs down, and getting ready for my first 5k in May! I can do 2 miles in 32 minutes right now... so its not the best, but at least its something. My question is if you guys think that by May I will be ready for the 5k? My goal is to do it in a half hour. Realistic goal? Also, if anyone has any advice, please give it! thanks!!

Bit of info - a month ago I couldn't do a mile in 20 min. so at least I'm improving!

Congrats, that's awesome! I'm working up to a 5k in April. Hoping to come in at 36 minutes. But I'll be happy if I just don't have to crawl across the finish line!

Your gana love it!! Just the expirience is really cool... For tips, i'd say just try running the 3.1 miles every time you practice running... Even if you have to walk for a bit... just keep pushing yourself and you will get there!! And Your time during the race will probably be better then your training time.. just because everyones motivation is contagious or something...ha. But you're going to have soo much fun! :)

YAY! I'll pray to the weather gods to make sure you have a fabulous sunny day with low humidity! I'm doing my first one at the end of April and my goal is to finish in 40 minutes. I'm setting it higher just in case my body isn't responding well that day or something with the weather is screwy (windy, rain, too cold, too warm, etc). My ideal finish time would be 36 minutes so we'll see!

    Good luck!!:drinker:

Well, I sure hope so, 'cause I'm running my first 5k in May and right now I can't even run 1 mile. And I think I can do it, so you're ahead of the game in my book.

The main advice I was given is to make sure you're running in the conditions the race will be in (road/trail) and make sure you're getting in hills. Other than that, keep following your training program and good luck!

This. HILLS most importantly. If you can put in a really good work out with hill intervals, then your race time will improve. I like to use the arc trainer at my gym in rotation with running on the treadmill to help get me ready for running hills. I have almost doubled in my speed/incline in about 30 days. Good Luck!
