    I recently read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and was quite pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect much because ...well, the thread doesn't need to go into that direction. Point is: it was very good. I think it's the only book I've recently felt compelled to recommend even to total strangers, whose reading preferences I'm unsure of. The writing is excellent and the story is very good.

    Her other two books are pretty good too. Still excellent writing, but the stories lack a bit.

    Oooh just noticed you also said anime recommendations

    I watch most on crunchyrolls. You've probably seen quite a few of these but;
    Trigun
    Cowboy Bebop
    Code Geass (If you haven't seen this, this would be my no. 1)
    Hitman reborn (love this one but its a very long series)
    Death note
    Hunter X Hunter
    Kore wa Zombie desu ka (goofy fun)
    Steins:gate (time travel)
    Deadman Wonderland (I LOVED the brutality of this but they cancelled it midway *tear* )
    Vampire Hunter D

    Ahhh I just finished the live action Death Note movie...still need to finish the series...gaaaah that series! It's so amazing! I see you don't have Avatar: The Last Airbender on there...but then again you may not qualify it as anime.
