In College with PCOS

I have tried using MFP before but lost the motivation when I didn't see more than a couple pounds progress. At 21 I was just diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) three months ago. For those who have heard of it you know that losing any amount of weight takes a lot of time, attention, motivation, and effort. I will be switching medication since Metformin ended up making me too sick in hope that it will help my body recognize the insulin I am producing.

If you are around my age, have PCOS, or just want more support feel free to add me.

I will be graduating college in June and starting grad school right afterwards. I want to get to a healthy weight so that I can counteract PCOS making it so I can have children. My boyfriend, the man I will one day marry, loves me the way that I am but after he graduates tech school for the Air Forces I want his jaw to drop when he first sees me. He is my everything and my ultimate motivation.

Yes losing weight is hard work for us with PCOS! I am 27 and was diagnosed at age 20. I have yo-yoed between a size 16-20 for 10 years straight. Since I found MFP 13 months ago, I have been able to stay on track better and even though I've only lost a total of 44 lbs, I'm down to a size 12 and healthier/skinnier than I was as a teenager even! I personally try to keep to a diabetic diet and exercise 3-5x week, mostly Zumba classes. Since I started getting healthier I have noticed my pain from a cyst rupturing is less severe, my periods are less severe, and I have tons more energy. I still have about 40-50 lbs left to go, but I know I can do it and you can do it too!
  • Hi!

I was also just diagnosed with pcos. I'm actually going through the process with the doctor of seeing what will work for the bod. My hormones are way screwed and I've read so many success stories with Metoforum and other medicine, actually looking forward to it. Couple things I've looked to on this is if you go to the groups tab at the top...there are groups for women with pcos...join one or two. I did and I turn for info there a lot. Another thing is that many women tend to be very mindful of their carb intake. Many women have said 100 carbs a day is good. But the reality is...everyone is different. I'm still trying to figure it all out. I got a referral for a dietation as well...waiting to get my blood work back and go through the whole process before I go to her....these are just somethings that I'm thinking for myself and I thought I would share:) Oh...I also invested some money into a personal trainer...I thought I knew how to do strength training...boy was I wrong! There is a lot that goes into that...can't just fling the weights around! I know you mentioned your age...I think you said 21...I'm 33...but if you would like to friend me...I'm all about helping if I can, I sure could use some as well!

    Take care-

Hey Amanda! I have also experience the same thing you went through! I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 14, freshmen year of high school. I've lost 50 pounds with the help of Metformin. My doses were like a roller coaster! Keep your head up and we will give you the best support system ever!

It was at about the age of 14 that the symptoms started to show themselves but it took over 6 years for my primary doctor to refer me to my OBGYN who finally gave me the diagnosis. I am super sensitive to medicine and after almost 2 months Metformin was making me sick every time I was taking it (500mg 3 times a day). My OBGYN just switch the type of medicine today so I will pick it up tomorrow and see how it works. He has high hopes though being that I am still young enough to learn a new lifestyle. Hearing the success of others with PCOS is encouraging which is needed since my main support will be leaving for basic training next month. I am doing this for him and our future together.
