Give up on your ultimate goal weight?

    I had an "ultimate goal weight" of 120 in mind. I was around 120 about 10 years ago and I was happy with how I looked then. Not with how I felt, because I got to that weight from major problems with a slipped disc in my jaw. I could only open my mouth 13mm without pain. Pretty hard to eat when you can barely get a french fry in your mouth. :wink:

    I've since come to realize that 120 would be virtually impossible for me now. My lean mass alone is about 110 pounds now, so I couldn't get to 120 without either losing muscle (no f'n way!) or having a dangerously low body fat percentage.

    I've also come to realize that the number on the scale just doesn't matter. No one knows it but you and maybe your doctor. And the doctor most likely weighs you when your fully dressed and have already had at least one meal, so they're not going to get the same number you get.

    I'm perfectly happy with forgetting about that goal. It was never realistic to start with... it was a number I pulled out of my *kitten*.

    Besides... I'm happier with how I look now.

    Can I just say...WOW! You were dead gorgeous in 2002 but you're seriously hot now. I think that a picture like this really does paint a thousand words. You are 14lbs more than 10 years ago but you are smaller with amazing shape and definition. Just goes to show what building muscle can do...there go all the "getting bulky" fears! You wouldn't want to lose a single pound more, you'e perfect!

    I wouldn't call it "giving up" on my goal weight, but like someone else said, my perspective has changed and that number isn't as important as it once was.

    I don't know if it was because I started lifting weights, or because I'm getting older, or just because I spend a lot of time trying learn about how to take care of my body and how different things (water retention, blahblahblah) affect the number on the scale; but I can tell you that I simply see the scale as one way to measure my progress.

    I'd love to get to my goal weight someday (about 13 pounds to go, may be unrealistic for me, may not be), but I'm not hung up on it. I decided that for this year, I'm sticking to fitness related goals and nutrition goals and the number on the scale will land where it lands. If I reach my goals (2 big ones are being able to do unassisted pull ups, and finishing NROLFW program), the scale should reflect that. :)

    I too have reached a plateau & it's been over a year but I haven't given up. One day I will break it and I will get there but I know as long as I continue doing what I am doing I won't gain the weight. I fell that when you give up you gain everything back that you lost and in the end all the hard work you have done is lost. I rather keep trying to reach my goal than going back to where I started.

    I had a goal weight in mind...some days I still think about, other days I am just blown away by the changes that are happening to my body shape that aren't measurable by the scale.

    I haven't given up, by my perspective has changed.

    I am right here as well. I am just under 5'6" and flux between 144-148 right now. As much as I *want* to weigh 136, I like where I am now, too.

    I think your weight is perfect for your height...anywhere between 120-125 at 5'5" is perfect. It's even on the low end, really.

    I picked mine off of an estimation of what my weight would be at a certain BF%. I really have no idea what the scale number will look like when I get there. Honestly, I'd be happy with a higher number..more food lol

    I wouldn't mind being between 148-155...I'm 5'11'' but have a smaller frame...at least if you go by my wrists and ankles! But I'd rather weigh 160 and be toned and firm at a higher weight. Just started doing resistance training again and can't wait to see more muscle definition as the fat melts off. :bigsmile:

    Having looked at your profile, and your before and after photos, I wonder where you still have weight to lose. Your arms are very slender and you still have boobs (you lucky lady!). You state that you have always been chubby, so this new, thin you is not something you've experienced before, nor has your body. You also say that you want not to be scared to eat icecream, which is something you have to achieve with your mind, not your body. You have achieved something remarkable and look like a completely different person than in your before photo. Perhaps you need to celebrate that success and enjoy your new body more, whether or not you continue to lose.

    I'm the same height and my goal weight throughout my life was 55kg (121lb). Pre childbirth, that was the best weight for me. Now, though, my fat distribution is different and my boobs disappear before my belly. 121lb was ok, but as I slipped below, an A cup started to get too big! Now I've decided 56-58kg is about right (though I'm pregnant now, so none of that matters), though I might experiment in future.

    As for what to do, if I'd been maintaining for a while on a low calorie count, I'd start gradually increasing to see what happened. Maybe a scoop of icecream here and there?:wink:

    Be fit, be active, be strong. Those are not numbers on a scale.
  • I am at goal weight and can eat 1200 cal/day with exercise to maintain. This is very low calories and hard to do. I am 5'2" and small - 100 lbs. I have 19% body fat so... I am not a twig - just small. I really try to stay within this but every now and then, go over and yes, gain.

    I need motivation to continue this lifelong journey. I feel great, look good and want to maintain.

    Thank you! I know I've come along way and I do think that perhaps strength training will help me the rest of the way- I've only begun that a few months ago. Like a lot of women, my middle is my biggest problem area. It's where I keep excess for sure, and also hard for me to take it off. And yes I still have boobs! I've gone from a D to a C and actually happier about that!

    And happy to report I had ice cream last night!
