Emotional Crash after Exercise

It happens to me every day. I go for my walk, at a very brisk pace, and when I come home I feel great! Best mood ever! But about 45 minutes later, I just crash emotionally. I feel horrible about myself, I get annoyed with things easily (like I want to strangle my husband right now just because he's been playing a stupid video game for three hours), and I just want to cry but I can't. This happens every single time I exercise.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is there anything I can do to keep the good mood going for longer? (aside from just exercising all day, which I won't do)

    Low blood sugar? Dehydration? Both of those make me feel the way you describe. Perhaps some extra water during your walk is in order as well as a piece of fruit after.

    That happens to me sometimes, but it's usually because I haven't eaten post-workout yet (I typically walk the dog, shower, and THEN make food after the gym). I get *super* cranky when I'm hungry, so maybe you just need some more workout recovery fuel! AKA...food.. :)

    I always feel the happy mood continue when I dive into a nice healthy lunch after I work out.

    OP - thank you for posting this question.
    And to all of you for your suggestions.

    This would happen to me - would do a long run, feel great and by the time I would get home and jump in the shower, sometime I would actually be crying in the shower. Could not ever figure out why. But, after a long run, I am never very hungry, so I don't eat much....but the drop in blood sugar would make sense!

    Thanks all - will have to keep that in mind. :happy:

    This. If you don't want to eat after the work out, eat a fairly large meal a couple of hours beforehand. (This works great for me however some people can't eat a heavy meal before a workout, but you can try and see.)

    I have low blood sugar problems, so that was the first thing that came t my mind when I read your post. All the other responses confirm it as far as I'm concerned.

    it's possible it's just built up energy/stress releasing itself now that you are relaxed enough to allow it.

    especially since you mentioned walking.
    some people may not agree with this, but holistically speaking, the hips carry emotional weight. so working out the hips, specifically, can release such emotional weight.
    i learned this during a yoga teacher training. and yes, during our long hip-opener yoga sessions, people tended to cry!!

    in contrast, the shoulders carry intellectual stress. now, how many stressful multi-tasking business people do you know with tight shoulders!? ;-)
