First week weigh-in.

So, I am hoping to lose a large amount of weight, but to do this I know I need to make some dramatic lifestyle changes and also train my brain to think differently. I have set myself some achievable goals and decided to start small and to grow from that (whilst shrinking, I hope!)
So after one week I have lost 5lbs. I am so chuffed. I haven't done that much different, other than counted my calories each day (which has made me think twice before certain foods) and just watched my portion sizes. I can hardly believe that alone has made me lose 5lb!
I just hope I can keep it coming off, while I don't expect another 5lbs next week, I am hoping it won't be too long until, for the first time in my life, I can say I have lost a stone. I need to keep my motivation up - MFP has helped so far!

great work on the first 5. Keep it up and youll keep dropping the weight. Im averaging 5.5 lbs a week right now. With my largest week of 7.4 lbs 2 weeks ago. I didn't stop eating to much that I used to other then I started working out 6 days a week and portion sizes are a real big thing. Even when you think your hungry just drink another glass of water and walk away from the table. I find it easier the longer I do it but I still have a rough day here and there. I try to eat something small every few hours so I don't get hungry. I keep healthy snack foods in my desk at work and make sure I have my bottle of water with me all the time. About the only things I stopped eating all together was chips and drinking pop. You will do great just keep reminding yourself how much better you feel today over how you felt yesterday. You can add me if you like I log everyday.0

When it comes to weight loss, it's calories in, calories out. It doesn't really matter what makes up those calories. There are a lot of people around here who'v lost a lot of weight eating total ****...'course they're not really getting proper nutrition doing so, but it really is just calories in/calories out.
Most people lose a lot of weight up front..most of it's water...when you eat less, your body requires less water to metabolize the food. Just remember that safe and healthy weight loss is about 1-2 Lbs per week...less if you don't have much to lose. I think I lost 5 Lbs per week for the first couple weeks then everything came back to what I had my goals set for which was 1 Lb per week.

Thanks guys!
Nothing dramatically changed, just being a little bit more sensible. I have been drinking SO much water (well much more than normal) and have benefited so much from it! For now I am just eating as normal but staying around my recommended calories and in a month or so I want to really focus on nutrition and start making every calorie (well most of them!) be beneficial to me nutritionally. Yeah, I've lost weight many times before in the last 20 years (and put it back on with an "interest payment").
You can always expect the first 3 weeks to a month to be your most dramatic weight loss. It's after that that the hard slog starts.
Without a doubt, the best process for me and 90% of other dieters is KEEPING A DIARY of food and exercise and a weekly weigh in. (Don't fall for daily weigh-ins as fluctuations happen. Weekly or fortnightly is the way to go.)
My best gauge is my belt and the relative looseness of my clothes. The number from the bathroom scales is more a confirmation.
I also have an accelerometer from years past which hangs from my singlet inside my shirt. And I match its results to that of the STRIIV app on my iPhone.
I think your thinking is good in the main.
