Respect-Earned or Given?Maybe both?

What do you guys think?
I think it's a bit of both, honestly. I think there is a basic and automatic amount of respect people are owed. It ranges person to person. Such as good manners and not treating other's harshly. I think even when someone "disses" you, it's somewhat ok to lose some manners but to go on an insulting spree and acting like an aye es es puts you on their level and get no one anywhere.
I notice people who say that other's have to earn their respect think that gives them the right to treat other's like crap. It's like they see it as very black and white. Not all mind you, but I notice it as a bit of a trend.

I view respect sort of likes grades in school. You start out with 100% and it is up to the individual to maintain it after that depending on their attitude and the face they show the world.0

For me, disrespect is what is earned. I try to treat every person I meet with respect, just because they're human beings. Sometimes a lack of respect might follow, depending on their behaviour, but even then I honestly try not to treat people disrespectfullly. If I lose respect for someone, I avoid them.0

I think people who say respect has to be earned are copping out. You should treat everyone with the respect that you would like to be treated with.0

Everyone deserves the respect of being seen as a human being.
But the deeper respect from hard work or overcoming challenges - that's earned.0 -

Exactly. If you treat a stranger like crap because they "need to earn your respect" then you just show that you're a ****ty person.0 -

Agree, couldn't say it better myself0 -

Stupid question but how do you multi-quote.
Whierd and OK- this is what I'm getting at. You said it better though0 -
I feel that it is earned but i give everyone a chance to prove it. Like i have seen people who dress in a way that offends me but treat me kindly. And there are people who smile and appear decent and then open their mouth and spew filth.0

That sounds fair to me. :flowerforyou:0 -
Both, you have to give it to get it. I think this goes with children toward adults also. I think an adult should be treated with respect from children, but if you as the adult can't respect the child then the gloves are off.0

Do unto others as you would have them do to you...however being a "religious" quote will put you on a cross0

^^ This, more or less.
Basically, respect is something automatically given to another human being, simply because they are human, made in God's image, or loved by God (pick one or more).
I shudder to think of what the world would be like if everyone had to struggle to be respected in the first place. Would we hate each other from the start? Put up walls? What?0 -
I was taught in the military that every person gets a certain level of respect. After that it depends on their actions where the respect level goes. Its based more on actions for me. I met a lot of officers who thought they deserved more respect simply by wearing a rank...no sir. Prove to me you DESERVE it.0

I treat everyone the same, unless they prove to me that they aren't worth my respect. Sometimes its hard if you go by appearances first off. I met one woman...and she didn't seem like my type of person (AKA Stuck up!!) ...but I kept talking with her and we became great friends!! We all look at a person's appearance wondering if we would get along...we can't help it..but its our decision to judge on appearance. Just because someone looks a certain way doesn't mean they aren't worth your respect.0

I respect everyone until they give me reason not to0
