I just bought some coconut oil today and I'm curious as to how to use it. Thoughts? What are the benefits of using coconut oil on a regular basis?

My mom is using it as a substitute for normal oil. I would think frying veggies for an asian dish or hawaiian dish would be good though.0

You can use it to cook with in place of other oils, use it as a moisturizer, eat it straight out of the jar, some people add it to smoothies. Not sure if it has any great benefits but it tastes good and is natural.0

I use it for cooking and also make my own body butter with coconut oil + shea butter + olive oil + jojoba oil + essential oil scents

I got a BAD perm, my hair turned gooey, had to have maaaany inches cut off and it's really short now. Buuut I've only been using coconut oil for about three days on my hair and it's already sooooo much healthier. I haven't tried it on my skin but heard it's GREAT. I also heard it's good for losing weight and helps you go to the bathroom A LOT. Some woman said she puts it in her morning coffee and then drinks it in warm water everyday.0 -

I use it in place of butter on my english muffin and sweet potatoes it is amazing.
Also I use it on my skin and cuticles.
I believe it has a low smoking point, like olive oil so you can't deep fry or get it too hot.0 -

I take 2 tbls raw daily (1 preworkout and 1 after dinner).
I try to cook with it as much as possible, replacing vegetable oil.

Coconut oil has medium-chain fatty acids (omega-3s). I use it in baking (substituting butter), face cleanser, moisturizer (skin and hair), pretty much anything. It tastes amazing on its own, but really boosts a smoothie. People are scared of fat, but healthy fats like omega-3s help in brain function, control of cholesterol levels, appetite control, and blood sugar control.
If you've heard horror stories about coconut oil and its high fat content in the past, most of those studies are referring to hydrolyzed versions of coconut oil. Any hydrolyzed oil is unhealthy because it produces trans fats that are not natural to the oil.0 -

It's a great moisturizer - my mother gets skin so dry it cracks and bleeds in the winter. For her coconut oil is more effective than prescription creams or other oils she's tried e.g. olive. When I adopted my dog she had dry, itchy skin that was red (and she was scratching and licking all the time - often well past bleeding). I decided to give her nightly coconut oil massages. Two days in the itching had significantly decreased, and within a few weeks there were no more late night itching sessions and all the red skin had cleared up.
It can be a bit oily, but I've yet to find a good moisturizer that isn't. I know some people use it as a deep conditioning hair treatment, though my hair responds better to a 50/50 jojoba/olive oil mix.
It's also great for cooking - get the extra virgin (it will look marbled and smell like coconuts). My roommate and I are a big fan of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies made with coconut oil instead of butter or shortening. The fragrance and flavor are amazing.0 -

Extra Virgin Coconut oil is actually used for many purposes. It is fantastic stuff. I'm guessing your main concern is nutrition though. Coconut oil is used extensively in tropical countries especially India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Phillipines etc, which have a good production of coconut oil. The oil was also once popular in western countries such as United States and Canada; however, there was a strong propoganda in 1970s spread by the corn oil and soy oil industry against coconut oil. Coconut oil was considered harmful for the human body due to its high saturated fat content till the last decade (2000s) when people started questioning this propoganda. How is Lauric Acid used by our body?
The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and helicobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Saturated fatty acids: Most of them are medium chain triglycerides, which are supposed to assimilate well. Lauric acid is the chief contributor, with more than forty percent of the share, followed by capric acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid and palmitic.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids: Linoleic acid.
Monounsaturated fatty acids: Oleic acid.
Poly-phenols: Coconut contains gallic acid, which is phenolic acid. These poly-phenols are supposed to be responsible for the fragrance and the taste of coconut oil and Virgin Coconut Oil is rich in these poly-phenols.
Certain derivatives of fatty acid like betaines, ethanolamide, ethoxylates, fatty esters, fatty polysorbates, monoglycerides and polyol esters.
Fatty chlorides, fatty alcohol sulphate and fatty alcohol ether sulphate, all of which are derivatives of fatty alcohols.

How to Use Coconut Oil?: If you are using coconut oil for topical purposes, especially hair care, just melt the oil (if it is solid) by keeping the bottle in the sun or warm water. You can also take some coconut oil out and put it in a small bowl and heat the bowl over a flame (do not use microwave). Then take the oil on your palm and apply it to your hair. If you want to use it for internal consumption, simply replace butter or vegetable oils with coconut oil in your recipes. Remember, you need not switch to coconut oil completely, as you will miss the benefits of other oils and dairy products.

I have been taking coconut oil 1tbsp in morning, 1 in the evening. (total 2 tbsp)
I am not sure if that has helped with my weight but it has rid me of rosacia, my hair is better, my menstral cycle which was really out of cycle (long, heavy and would last for 2 weeks leave for one and then return) went back to a regular cycle and only lasts 3 days. As an added bonus I used to have have severe cramping, headaches etc. with my cycle and now they are gone. It has helped with my migraines. I was having them frequently and now the are rare.
I just take my coconut oil on a spoon and eat small bites of it. Some brands taste better than others so experiment.
I have also used my tbsp on a piece of toast instead of butter it is super yummy!0 -
I have one jar in the kitchen and use it as a butter substitute. But I also have a jar in my bathroom. I do a hair treatment every week (put oil on hair, put shower cap on, leave for 30 mins then wash out with shampoo and conditioner, shampoo twice if necessary) and I use it as a lotion. It soaks into your skin very very quickly leaving it extremely soft and a little bit goes a loooooong way. I also use it on my legs after shaving and I noticed it helps razor burn too. You can also make your own sugar scrub with coconut oil and sugar. So many great things to use it for. Also, look on Pinterest for ideas to use it for!0

Oh my gosh, I use it to condition my hair, I use it on my skin, I made a sugar scrub with it recently and I can't keep my daughter out of it. I also use it for cooking. It's wonderful stuff.0
