everyone tells me that they gain weight with the depo shot. i just got it. i have not gained but i exercise and eat reduced calorie. I seem to be at a stand still.I gain a pound and then lose it and gain it back no matter what I do.I even tried diffrent exercise thinking that I need to give my exercise a boost. I am wondering if i should be happy to maintain until the shot wears off. I am also stressing because my sister has lung cancer and is not expected to live long. So I don't know if stress has anything to do with it. It is hard.

I took the Depo shot a few years back and am in the process of trying to decide whether or not to take it again. I don't remember the weight gain (of course I was early 20s and weight gain wasn't as big an issue for me then), but the side effects of moodiness, hot flashes, basically menopause was more than I could handle. My Dad had to take it too for his prostate cancer. He could honestly say he had true sympathy for what me and my mom went through. How long does it last in your system again?
Stress I think is a huge factor when it comes to weight. I know there's a study about the chemicals it releases in your body. For me, when I get really depressed, I tend not to eat. But stress will make me eat, and eat, and eat, and eat.
I'm so, so sorry to hear about your sister. I went through a long four year roller coaster with my dad and it can take alot out of you. Maybe not concentrating so much on your weight but on just staying healthy and getting decent rest is all you need right now. Please make sure you take care of yourself, or you won't be able to help take care of her. We're here for any ranting, raving, crying, screaming, yelling that you may need to expel.0 -
It stays in your system for 3 months. I think it may be stress and the shot.I have a two month old baby too.i think i am going to try to exercise and stay healthy. If i looseit will be great but if not oh well.I am stressing myslef too much over it. The thing is i am fitting into clothes that I couldn't wear two weeks ago but the scale keeps going up one pound down the next day.It make me not want to get on it.It is an accurate scale. I went through this with my mom some years back. She died with gall bladder cancer which is rare. I myself had thyroid cance.Which was not so bad. My sister doesn't understand why I got better and she is not. Anyway thanks so much for your reply.0

i was on depot for 12 years and honestly i loved it it made my life so much easier, i think the weight gaining is caused by not taking care of yourself, so u should be fine i have my tubes tied now but im thinking about asking the doctor if i can go back on it to get rid of the monthy visitor ya know
my only side affect was depression but i have always had that problem and once i took meds for it i was fine
i'd say see how it goes for the first 6 months then decide if you want off it--they say it stays in your system for 3-9 months afterwards but as we know every woman is very different
good luck to ya0 -
every woman is different.I had several friends that said it made them gain weight. One had no cycle, while another one had it for three weeks. I asked my doctor about it.He said that i may gain some but i have had only one shot so it shouldn't be that bad.I haven't really gained. It is just hard for me to loose. It use to not be so hard. I exercise, cut calories, lost weight. I lost now it is like I gain a pound and loose a pound.I am trying to loose my last ten pounds.0

I've been on it for almost 8 years and I didn't gain weight because of it. In fact in the first 2 years I was on it I lost about 5 lbs.0

I've been on it for some time. Not sure if I gained weight because of the shot, but I'm losing weight now (though slowly). I would say 10 lbs is worth not having periods. Haven't had one in years. I don't have any other side effects from the shot.0
