Hey all,

I've recently discovered that I actually enjoy running. I know that running on the outside track is better than the treadmill, HOWEVER I live in NY and it is COLD right now. :grumble:

SO, I want to know, how LONG/OFTEN should I run on the treadmill a week, to lose about 1-2 lbs a week? I enjoy the elliptical and the Stair Climber machine too.

Please help!! :flowerforyou: (Please add me as a friend too.)

Roe.

    Hi!,

I live next door to you in Ontario so I know how cold it is running outside right now :)

This is not an easy question!

    Here's an interesting article: http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/how-many-calories-are-you-really-burning-0?page=single

Essentially the number of extra calories you burn while running = number of miles x 0.63 x your weight = number of calories burned.

    1 lb of fat = 3500 calories

For me, I weigh around 160 lbs. I would have to run 3500/(160x0.63) = around 35 miles a week to lose one pound. So, like maybe an hour a day of running?

But when I run (or do any sustained cardio) I get HUNGRY! Uncontrollably hungry. I do better by cutting calories to lose weight, and short bursts of high-intensity exercise.

    I hope that wasn't too confusing! ;)
