Is it just me...

Is it just me or is there barely any exercises in the database. I feel like my calories burned in my diary are off because i can't find anything i search can't even find resistance band.I have been trying to find stuff close to what i'm doing is that good enough or should i try and add my own stuff,i just find that it's hard to find accurate calories burned because weight effects exercise and everybody burns differently. Any suggestions?

Well for those of us that don't have a HRM......

Best you can do is to google the particular workout you are doing + calories burned - find the calculator that allows you to put in your weight and age and minutes. You can then either make a custom entry into your Exercise log OR you can try and find something in the database that matches what you burned.

E.g. Biggest Loser workouts tend to fall under Aerobics on MFP
30 Day Shred falls under Curves Circuit training
  • I just bought a bodybugg recently because I wanted to get an accurate calculations of the calories I was burning and it syncs to MFP. Just walking from one end of the room to the next you are burning calories, but you don't really calculate that usually when you manually input your exercising. I love it, because I have such a high number that is lost and it just makes me want to move more just so I can watch the numbers go up.

What are you looking for that you can't find?

Resistance bands probably aren't in there because what you do with them is what really determines the calorie burn - in the same way the dumbbells are not in there.

Most basic things are there, you just have to think of what your are doing in general. Resistance band would be a form of strength training, 30 DS is like circuit training, a Zumba class is aerobic dancing, etc. Take a moment and think of what the activity is that you're doing in general terms because the list would be so long it would be unmanageable if every activity you could think of doing was listed separately.

Don't sweat the exercises in the database (no pun intended). They can't really be completely accurate (unless it's a coincidence) because they can't possibly take into account your fitness level or the level of intensity in the exercise performed. Exercise bands would probably be the least accurate of all. What bands did you use? What exercises did you use those bands for? How many sets? How many reps? etc... It would all just be a random guess.

So just pick something that's close and go with it. If your weight loss is not as expected (too high or too low), adjust from there.

If you want to be anal you can use something like this: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php

Though I would strongly recommend you go with the "TDEE minus deficit" approach and not worry about calorie burns from exercise sessions.

Even if MFP had "your" exercise listed ..... the numbers would still be off.

Calories burned depends upon lots of factors .... height, weight, age, gender, exertion level (that's not all of them) .... so MFP would be a "guesstimate" .... This is why heart rate monitors are helpful ..... the monitor compares your normal resting heart rate with the rate during your workout ... this is the exertion level

Re: strength training .... you don't burn calories the same way a cardio (much of strength training calorie burns ...... are after your workout is done). Don't sweat it ... too many variables to track.
