walking on work breaks?

Hi,
I have a question. I work at a college campus and yesterday I walked for 30 minutes around the campus on my lunch break and just a few minutes ago I came back from a 10 min walk. My walk is at a brisk pace (I'm breathing hard) and it is up and down small hills and parking lots.

How should I log this? I want to make sure I'm getting the most for my calories because I have a desk job and can only get to the gym about 4 times a week.

Thanks!

I do the same thing! I log it as walking, either 3.5 or 4.0 mph.

I also walk during my lunch breaks. Its good to continue doing it. A nice brisk walk everyday is good and far better than doing nothing at all. Besides who doesnt enjoy a nice walk outside.

On rest days and days I just can't fit a sweaty workout in I walk fast. If you have a smartphone, I recommend downloading an app like CardioTrainer or Runkeeper to get a better idea of your pace to track against. I actually set one up for "Berry Pace" of 3.75 as my average pace falls between two MFP ones!

I do the same and use the Runtastic app to track it.

I don't power walk and don't stroll either. It usually works out in the 3.0-3.5mph bracket.

Runtastic is great because it auto logs any cardio exercise to MFP.

I use the Endomonda app, and it syncs with MFP so that when I walk it automatically logs it on here. You can also use it to record other activities, such as hiking, biking, etc. When you are done, it tallies it and adds it on MFP

You should get / or borrow (since you just want an example) a HRM and walk a few times using it. Then log it.

The apps on your smartphone are great... I haven't used the others but i use MapMyWalk and i love it, it gives an average pace and calorie burn, i choose the closest speed on mfp and adjust the calories to those from mmw :)

Get a fit bit, and let it do the logging for you!

Quick road to failure, searching for ways to make sure you get the most to eat.

Hi! I walk in lunch breaks and it is one of the things that has really helped my weight loss. When you log the exercise just search for walk and the options for different speeds will come up, already calculated by MFP.

I disagree with this. There is no harm in exercising so you can eat a little more. I do it all the time! I eat ( most of) those exercise calories , and I am not a failure :)
  • Thanks for the advice everyone!
