Chia seeds, what's the deal?

Been reading about these everywhere, just picked up my first pack at the grocery store. So I can really just sprinkle these on stuff for an added boost of fiber to fill me up and omega-3's for the health properties?? Are they really that magic?? What do you suggest I do with them? Does anyone have a strong opinion?

I bought a bag recently to try out and I'm kind of in the same boat as you! But I have mixed them into pancake batter, with yogart, and if you mix them with a little bit of water they gel up and you can eat them just like that-or I've cut up a banana and mixed it in with the gelled up seeds. Not bad! I use them as more of a supplement that a snack or meal.0

All good ideas! Yah I definitely thought of it more as something to add to food rather than eat alone.
Also bumping myself to say I just sprinkled one serving on a salad that I often have for dinner and right now I am feeling noticeably more full than usual after that salad. Fullness isn't really too big an issue for me (I am satiated at 1200 cals PLUS my exercise cals) but I"m hoping the fiber will be good for me!
Any other chia experts out there?0 -
I, too, bought a bag and have yet to use it. But I wanted to say that I bought this really cool drink at Whole Foods with chia seeds in it. It was cherry juice, chia seeds and some stevia. So maybe add some to juice or iced tea, the seeds do gel up but it's not hard to swallow or anything.0

By no means an expert but chia seeds are great! I had them as part of my breakfast this morning. I made a chia "pudding" by mixing 1/4 chia seeds, 1 cup almond milk, 1 tbsp agave, 1 tbsp vanilla extract and a little cinnamon. make sure you mix really well for a minute or 2 then cover it and refrigerate it overnight.
I've also heard about adding them into smoothies and I've made a banana chia seed bread--really good! You can also make an egg substitute with them as well. Just google chia seed recipes and you're bound to find some great options! They help me stay fuller and I know they have some great antioxidants. good luck!0 -
I like to put chia seeds in my smoothes or when I make a mock milkshake. Adds thickness, plus extra fiber. Try a weight watchers smoothie mix(my fav is the choc.),skim milk and/or water,chia seeds(about 1 tbsp.) and I like to add a banana and a few ice cubes. Blend and enjoy!0

I usually put chia in yogurt (I eat coconut yogurt) and smoothies. In yogurt I let it sit for a few minutes with the chia seeds mixed in before I eat it, so they can get that layer of jelly on them.0

We just started using them and yeah, they're great for adding that "filled up" feeling. Also going to try to use the "Chia-gel" in place of the egg in my turkey meatloaf later this week. I'll let you know how that turns out.
I will say this. If you sprinkle Chia seeds in something, be sure to rinse that dish out well. It's a lot of fun throwing the dish in the soapy water and then scrubbing out the gel. :laugh: :laugh: Live and learn0 -

I do something similar, except I add oats and have it for breakfast. I take 1/2 tbsp of chia seeds, 1/2 cup of oats, 1 packet splenda, and 1 cup chocolate almond milk, mix it all up in some tupperware, pop it in the fridge overnight and grab this bowl of deliciousness as I run out the door in the mornings. It's basically no effort, and ensures I have a healthy breakfast.
One of my favorite treats is to take vanilla almond milk, some canned coconut milk/cream, splenda, chia seeds, and frozen mango chunks, mix it up in some tupperware and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. It's the most delicious rice pudding like treat you'll ever have!!!! Mmmmm, craving some now! Think I'll go whip up a batch!0 -

Unlike flax, chia does not need to be ground to realize its benefits so it is sold as a whole seed. I eat it because of the omega 3s but by no means are the seeds magic. They form a gelatinous goo around it after being soaked, which is why they make you feel more full if you are eating the seeds. I like soaking them and making pudding out of it. I use the link below as my base recipe but use maple syrup instead of agave, cow's milk instead of almond milk, omit the lemon but add cinnamon. It's like tapioca pudding and delicious!

I love chia seeds! White or Black. I eat them whole or ground. I typically put them in my oatmeal or my smoothies. I do notice that they keep my fuller for longer and I get full faster (soecifially with the whole ones). Try it! mix it into your food for a few days and then try eating the same food without it. You'll notice a difference. Plus YES they are packed with omegas... WHICH MEANS they are high in fat (good fats, but still). so I usually only do 1-2 tblspoons per day when I do use them.0

Do they taste like anything? I eat a lot of soup and someone mentioned that they work well in soup.
What isle are they found in? Baking? Organic/Health? I shop at Giant (East Coast).0 -
Unlike flax, chia does not need to be ground to realize its benefits so it is sold as a whole seed. I eat it because of the omega 3s but by no means are the seeds magic. They form a gelatinous goo around it after being soaked, which is why they make you feel more full if you are eating the seeds. I like soaking them and making pudding out of it. I use the link below as my base recipe but use maple syrup instead of agave, cow's milk instead of almond milk, omit the lemon but add cinnamon. It's like tapioca pudding and delicious!

I put 1tbsp. of black chia seeds in 8oz. water after my breakfast shake & again right b4 my dinner I love them they give me that full feeling so google the words "chia seeds" & then click on "top 10 benefits of chia seeds" just so u can kno a lil more :drinker:0

I am DEFINITELY noticing the "fuller feeling." I distributed 2 tbsp throughout my three meals today and I never wanted to reach for a snack between meals! So far I'm a big fan.
Someone asked about taste....I can't taste them at all. In my protein smoothie I noticed the little gooey pellets but it didn't bother me!
All I could think of when I first read about them was Chia Pets! Haha0 -

I have been buying chia seeds for probably about 6 months now. I absolutely love them. I love them in my eggs for breakfast, in a smoothie, on a salad, or sprinkled on top of my english muffin with peanut butter.0
