Hi !
I have recently started taking Jamieson brand "Salmon & Fish Oils Omega 3 Complex" supplements. I've done my research and realized it could be a good addition to my health routine. Just wondering though - I am 5'3 and 142 lbs, each pill contains 180 mg's of EPA and 120 mg's of DHA. I have figured I should be taking around 6 pills per day? On the bottle it say take 1-3 per day but to get the proper amount of omega 3 if im doing the math right i think i should take 6. Anyone know if i am right/wrong in this calculation? Any help would be very much appreciated!!!
Thanks

Do you not eat fish?
Generally speaking around 3g's is considered, but depending on a particular medical condition, that will vary, so I would suggest to take as prescribed and talk to your Dr. That particular brand seems to be skimpy on the EFA's.0 -
Hi neanderthin - two questions for you
1) Was wondering what you meant by "Generally speaking around 3g's is considered, "
2) What are EFA's
Just as a background i have excellent health, no medical conditions, no medications etc.0 -
The consensus appears to be in the 2 or 3 % of total calories for total omega consumption with a ratio of anywhere from 1:1 to 4:1 and with Americans consuming lots of n:6's for a total of about 9% of total calories, the need for n:3 fish oil is higher and that's where the dosage is basically formed. Eat less omega 6's then less 3's are needed for that balance. That's not to say that societies that consume lots of fish and plant omega's are overdoing it, on the contrary heart disease is not near as prevalent or almost not existent.
EFA's are "Essential Fatty Acids" them being ALA and LA (Alpha linolenic Acid and Linoleic Acid) the first an omega 3 the latter an omega 6. These are essential fat that which can not be supplied by the body and must be consumed in the foods we eat. EPA and DHA are omega 3's but can be made by the body and therefore not classified as EFA's.......not to confuse the issue from my EFA comment previously. Because the body doesn't do a very good job at elongating or desaturating ALA to EPA and DHA is the universal reason for consuming fish oil directly instead of just consuming more ALA.0
