weigh-in questions

Just curious how often you guys weigh in and take measurements?? I always try to do it in the morning after i go to the bathroom and before I eat anything to get the most consistent results, but I wonder if weighing in twice a week is too often because I'm not seeing much results and I wonder how long it takes to lose fat after working out?

Personally, I weigh in daily, first thing in the morning. I understand how this works so I know how long it should take to reach my goal. The results are there, just not at every weigh in. It's all about patience..

    Hi -
Yes, weighing in twice a week is too much. My doctor and nutritionist have both told me to weigh no more that once a week. (Weight Watchers has the same rule.) If you feel like you are becoming too fixated on the number, then start to weigh every other week.

And, yes, you are weighing yourself at the right time of day, i.e., after going to the bathroom but before eating. Remember to always weigh yourself around the same time of day each time (which it sounds like you are doing) and preferably on the same day of the week.

Measurements should only be taken once a month.

    Good luck!
  • I like to weigh in every morning but not pay too much attention to the exact number every morning but how it appears to be trending over a few days.
  • The problem with only weighing once a week is that you are putting all your attention on that one day that could be a bad number due to many reasons. Weigh often, but do not fret.
  • I find the scale goes up and down by 2-3 pounds during the day. So I weigh myself the same time every day, in the evening. I only record my weight once a week, and only if my weight's been down a bit consistently for a couple of days.

That way I'm sure I'm losing and I'm not recording it going up, which would be demotivating for me.
  • Oh, and I definitely like measuring at least once a week - that way I always have *some* kind of good news - either on the scale or the tape measure lol

I prefer to weigh every morning as you mentioned. It keeps me thinking in the back of my mind to watch what I eat but I don't get crazy by the numbers. I know from past experience that my weight will fluxuate. Daily fluxuations are usually retained water. I also know that the weight is not the end all be all of this journey. If my clothes are getting looser then I'm happy. sgrubby has it right, its all about the patience and I'll add the persistence.

I weigh in everyday, but only post it to my check in about once a week. I don't fret over the number, because I know that sodium, and other factors can cause that number to fluctuate. I do this to keep me on track and also, because my mom has a severe problem with water retention and if I inherit it, I want to be right on top of it.

I weigh twice a week but Friday is my official weigh in day.

I measure maybe every month or two

I weigh myself every day. Like another said, I don't worry too much about the actual number so much as the trend. I feel like it keeps me focused. I record my weight whenever I see a new low so that I can look back in the tracker and see what's going on.

I always weigh myself once a week on the day after a full rest day. When I weigh myself when I have worked out hard the day before, I always weigh a little high.
  • I weigh in about once a week, or once every other week, just depends I guess. I made the mistake doing the whole weigh in after working out because depending on how much water you drink (which I drink a lot,) your body is going to hold on to it. You're sweating and drinking water your body is going to want to hold on to it so you weigh in after and you gained about 2 or more lbs its frustrating...I always do it before I workout after I use the restroom on an empty stomach. That's the best way I have found so far. Hope this helps :)
  • I weigh myself everyday but I use Friday as my log weigh in day. I fluctuate a lot during the week especially if I had too much sodium over the weekend. It's easier for me to keep track of my progress going off one day a week rather then several. I measure if I think my clothes are feeling loose.

OMG - I've noticed this too! My weight drops 2-3 days after I've worked out, but the day after, it's up a bit. Thought it was just me.
  • I say weigh and measure yourself as often as you want.....this is about you and no one else. I weigh twice a week to get an idea where I'm at and I haven't measured in months.....I just go by how my clothes are fitting.
  • I do only once a week... or I should say, I only log it once week. Sadly, I jump on the darn scales every day! Sometimes I will see movement on the scale on a wednesday but I force myself not to log anything until my log in day on Friday. I also do it first thing in the morning.

Good points! Thats good to know...so do you think it takes about 2-3 days for your body to register weightloss?? I have always wondered after a really good weekof eating well and working out, when I could see it reflected on the scale...

It's best once a week to post if it goes down and you're doing it right by morning and after bathroom use and before eating but also it's best to always wear the same thing too. I do it before I get in the shower so I have nothing else on to add lol. Also remember if you are gaining any muscle then muscle weighs more so u won't see lbs drop but inches lost. Now that I am sticking to herbalife I pay more attention to what needs to be watched and not just selling products lol. Stay strong

I weigh in once a week. Always first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom and before eating/drinking anything. More than once a week and I'll go crazy.

I take measurements once a month, right after weighing in.

I also take comparison photos, once every three months.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat, a pound is a pound.. whether its a pound of lead or a pound of feathers.. muscle is more dense than fat by volume and occupies less space than a pound of fat.. but all in all a 2 + 2 = 4 no matter how you look at it

I think it depends on how much you want to lose and where you are in your weight loss journey. If you are like me and have a lot to lose weighing everyday could be very beneficial as you see the weight come off quickly. If you have just a few pounds to lose or you are getting close to your goal then weighing in less often maybe beneficial as the weight is coming off very slow. Either way you figure out what works for you and go with it.

This is why I weigh myself everyday. I only record it here once a week. I record my weight in a spreadsheet and that way I have been able to figure out how my body reacts to things, like working out, eating different foods, etc.

Also, muscles retain water while they are healing after a workout.

For me it's important to understand how my body reacts to things, then the number doesn't freak me out as much.

Ultimately, you should weigh in as much as you can handle it.

    Good luck!!

I weigh myself every Tuesday and Friday. Helps me to stay accountable through the week and gives me an extra day if I get a little crazy over the weekend  I do my measurements the last day of every month
  • I weigh in on Monday morning 1st thing. get up, go to bathroom, then weigh in. I put my scale in the basement so I'm not tempted to weigh in during the week. If you have trouble from repeated checking pull the battery & give to someone for the week.

I weigh in every Sunday morning, just like you do (after potty before eating, standing there butt nekked). ---I usually skip weighing in "that week OTM" because I gain a lot of water weight and don't want to get depressed. How fast you lose depends on how much you weighed to begin with and lots of other factors of course; calorie intake, exercise, metabolism, if your sleeping well, what medications you might be taking, any systemic issues you have.......... yadda yadda yadda. not an easily answered question.

I'm a weekly although he tempts me every time I step into the bathroom. I do it once a week so I dont go crazy with numbers.
  • I weigh in once a week, your body will go up and down naturally so any more often and you might not get a genuine reading.

I do it the same day and time every week - Friday mornings after the toilet :D
