    bump: to show the thread in the most recent activity

    could be "fist bump" if you like the thread as well

    On the rest of the internet, and occasionally on MFP, people use bump to bring a post to the top of the 'most recent' list so that it doesn't go missed.

    For instance, if you didn't get an answer to your question and time had gone by, it would get buried in the threads. So, you would post "bump" for meaningless activity to make it come to the top of the "recent posts" stack.

    However since MFP doesn't have a "follow this thread" option or a "like" or "notify me of new responses to this thread", the only way to track a thread on the website (without bookmarking) is to contribute to it, so it shows up in "my topics". By writing "bump", someone can contribute meaninglessly to a thread.
