Can someone help me understand about calories?

Hello everyone! Please excuse my ignorance.
MFP states that in order for me to reach my ideal weight, I need to consume 3,180 calories daily. Why do I need to consume more calories if the point is to eat less calories? What would happen if I only consume 2500 or less?
~INFO~
Height: 6'4
Age: 18
Weight: 435 lbs
Goal Weight: 250 lbs (For now)
Exercise: Walking 5 times a week for 50 minutes each day.
Thanks in advance!

you need to eat less calories than it takes for you to maintain your current weight... so 3180 is presumably less than you used to eat?0 -
Before I joined MFP, I used to consume around 2500-2800 calories daily.0

Eat at a deficit, do your planned workouts and don't worry too much about the size of your deficit. At your weight your body can tolerate really large deficits well. I know because I've been there. If 2500 a day works for you, eat it!0

My thoughts exactly. As long as you do not have any existing medical conditions. 2600-2800 would do rather well for you.0
